Strogg Uniform

[Source]

Not to be confused with the Ammo Depot in Quake II.

The Ammo Depot is the second map in the Fourth Unit of Ground Zero. Most of it is a storage facility, filled with numerous ammo crates. It also houses a machine, which creates antimatter containment pods, which can be combined with an antimatter core to assemble an Antimatter Bomb.

Another interesting feature of this area is a device known as the Strogg Bio-Maintenance Chamber, which can give the player a Strogg uniform, allowing him a disguise - see the Secrets and Strogg Uniform sections below.

Secrets

  • #1) When you get to the room with the Bio-Maintenance Chamber (the blue Strogg pod pictured above), continue to the next room to activate it (via the keyboard on the console that the Gladiator is guarding) then go back into the pod room. A Light Guard will be spawned out of the tank; kill him and then step into it to obtain a Strogg Uniform and achieve the secret. See the passage below for more information about the benefits of the Strogg Uniform. Note: as soon as you enter the pod, a forcefield will activate around it. Do not step back out of it immediately after stepping in, or the forcefield may activate inside your body, instantly killing you.
  • #2) In the large ammo storage area, near a button which activates a bridge overhead, there is a crate held in a grappling arm. The underside of the crate is damaged, and can be broken with gunfire to reveal a Double Damage.

Strogg Uniform

The Strogg Uniform obtained from the Bio-Maintenance Chamber allows the player to walk past Strogg without alerting them. The disguise will be lost when the Strogg witness you attacking them. You can take advantage of your disguise to shoot the Strogg while they stand idle, and certain of your weapons deal double damage when striking an idle enemy, especially the Railgun. It's possible to kill enemies while maintaining the disguise, so long as you can insta-kill one with the Railgun without any other Strogg witnessing the kill, or throw Tesla Mines while remaining out of their view. If the disguise is lost, the player can return to the Chamber several times to obtain another Strogg uniform, including on your second visit to this level. However, no matter what you do, it will be lost as you return to the Munitions Plant.

In the 2023 remaster, the image of a Strogg helmet will appear on the player's HUD, replacing the green cross next to their health count. When the disguise is lost, the image will revert to the green cross, indicating to the player whether their disguise is still active.
