The Arena Eternal is a self-contained dimension constructed by the mysterious Vadrigar to serve as a battleground for their entertainment. The games Quake III Arena, Quake III: Team Arena and Quake Live take place within it.
The Arena is heavily augmented with advanced alien technology, which allows it to defy some of the laws of physics and even create new ones - it warps time and space. It is stocked with various weapons, ammo and devices that facilitate combat. There are also numerous hazards, some of which are highly lethal. Nevertheless, death is never permanent in the Arena - fallen fighters are always brought back to life.
Occupants
The Arena Eternal is occupied by a large number of gladiators that have been abducted by the Vadrigar from various points in time and space. They have varying levels of combat expertise and display different behaviour in combat.
At some point, the Vadrigar became interested in team-based combat, which led them to form five distinctive Clans.
Environment
The Arena Eternal consists of various battlegrounds, each with a unique environmental theme. There are gothic castles, demonic temples, hi-tech factories, fetid crypts and more. Each of these battlegrounds appears to be isolated from the others, existing within a "pocket" of its own.
The environment features numerous hazards, such as water, slime, lava, Fog of Death and the Void. There are also various helpful features, such as teleporters, gates, bounce pads and acceleration pads. Some arenas feature unique and/or hidden features that can only be found by the most inquisitive gladiators.
Regions
The Tiers
The main section of the Arena Eternal is devided into seven Tiers, which correspond the different levels of gladiator expertise. This is where the primary battles take place.
New recruits must pass through an introductory battle before they are allowed to advance through the higher ranks in the Tiers - Trainee, Skilled, Combat, Warrior, Veteran, Master and Elite, which is the home of the ultimate Arena Master.
Each of the lower Tiers has an Arena Master of its own, which stands as a last obstacle before fighters trying to advance to the next level. A Tier usually has a specific theme that distinguishes it from the rest.
The Team Arena
At some point in time, the Vadrigar developed a keen interest in team-based combat, which lead to the construction of a new section of the Arena Eternal. This new area features numerous new team battlegrounds where the five Clans compete. This region features large "terrain" battlegrounds that appear to be located on the surface of planets.
Hidden or Lost Areas
Some areas of the Arena Eternal have been hidden for some reason or lost over the ages, making them unaccessible through normal means. These include a mysterious arena that was almost lost, a strange empty room, as well as a battleground that has drifted beyond reality.
