The Badlands are a wild area beyond the boundaries of the Strogg industrial complex. The level is mostly outdoors and consists mainly of rough natural environment - canyons and caves, surrounded by slimy rock walls. There are several underground tunnels and small pools of water as well.

Somewhere within this region is a Gekk lair. They have recently stolen the Airstrike Marker and seem to be treating it with some kind of reverence. However, Joker intends to retrieve it from them.

Secrets

  • #1) After climbing the ladder into the outdoors, take a moment to examine the sides of the hatch. One of the sides has a small grate inlaid—destroy it to reveal a shootable button. This button opens a secret area at the bottom of the ladder, a pool of water containing Adrenaline.
  • #2 & #3) When you reach the upper cliffs above the aforementioned ladder, there are two ledges you can work your way up to by jumping on small ledges. One contains a suit of Body Armor, and the other a Quad Damage.
  • #4) When you reach the exit door, examine the ledges nearby. It's possible to jump your way to a ledge containing Adrenaline.

Bugs

  • On Easy difficulty, this level suffers from a missing kill - one Gekk fails to spawn into the level correctly, preventing the player from achieving 100% kills. In the original releases of Quake II, The Reckoning and Ground Zero, many levels suffered from missing kills, but most of them were fixed in the 2023 remaster. The Badlands appears to be the only level in the single-player campaigns which still has this problem.
  • Some Gekk spawns are triggered so strangely, that you can get through the level without seeing them all (e.g. 74/80 by the time you get to the exit). Backtrack to the start usually allows the player to re-trigger the missing spawns (e.g. near the first water pool)
