While Single Player Levels cover all levels intended for Single Player and Category:Quake supported levels cover all levels with both modes, the problem is that many map designers state their map is intended for Single Player when there isn't anything to do. Or it might just be a test map. Or it is just an Introductory level. In any event, loading them up results in the player realizing the level didn't offer much in the way of playability. Deathmatch is relatively well-advertised, but Single Player seems to be more of a mess, and thus the reason for this category.

As intent should be left the same, this category has been created simply to sift through the levels and find those that are actual "playable" levels that fit a certain set of criteria as listed below:

  • Enemies - For the level to be considered playable in a Single Player environment, the most important feature is that it has enemies. Levels without this can be assumed to be test levels, deathmatch levels, or filler levels.
  • Single Player Orientation - DMAS02: DeCarlo and several other deathmatch levels tend to include an enemy or two, but aren't really "playable" in Single Player due to how barebones it is. This is a bit up to interpretation, generally it will mean levels with a decent number of enemies, but some levels may be boss levels and thus only have a couple. Use common sense, was the level designed to actually fight those enemies or are those enemies there as a bonus? Though I must break you (Box) has a level exit and enemies, the test-like nature means it is not really a "playable" level in general terms.
  • Level Exits - A big problem with Q2 is that you kill a couple enemies, then quit or need to switch levels. For it to feel fully playable and be considered part of this list, there must be some sort of finality to it.

As most levels that meet the criteria are part of a greater campaign, these are referred to as campaign levels. Note they do not need to be part of an actual campaign, however, it must simply "flow" like it could belong in the regular campaign. A good judge is if it could be a level in the Quake campaign or not. It may be a level of a lesser quality, but are the base elements there that it could pose as a level in the main game?
