Data CDs are items found in Quake II that are sometimes used to open locked doors, and sometimes used to interface with computer equipment.

In the main game, they are used to open locked doors in the Torture Chambers and The Reactor, and another is found in Unit 9 and used in combination with the Data Spinner to sabotage the Strogg's Communication Laser.

The item also appears in The Reckoning in the mission Outer Compound, and is used in the level Intelligence Center in order to upload information about the Strogg Counterstrike Fleet to Joker's superiors.

Meanwhile, Ground Zero features it in the level Tactical Command, and it's used to upload information to Stepchild's superiors in Logistics Complex. Then it's picked up again in the latter level to be used in a communications computer in the former level, at the climax of the unit.

Finally, the overall main mission of Call of the Machine requires all six Marines to pick up each a Data CD in order to locate and open a portal to the Maker's domain.
