Fall in Quake II is a hazard which injures the player if it lands on a solid surface from a significant height. The severity of the damage is based upon the height from which the player falls - the higher the height, the more damage the player suffers. Armor, the Power Shield and the Defender Sphere absorb some of the damage suffered by falling, just as they do against most other forms of damage; Invulnerability will prevent the damage altogether. Landing in water (or indeed any Fluid) can prevent damage from falling if it is deep enough, but shallow patches of water may not help.

There are certain points in the single-player campaigns where fall damage seems to be unavoidable unless the player were to use an Invulnerability, such as when returning to the Reactor after the Cooling Facility, in the Outer Base (The Reckoning), entering the Widow's Lair (Ground Zero), or as a consequence of accessing certain secret areas such as the Chain Gun in the Ammo Depot. However, the damage suffered is fairly small and there are enough medikits around that a player is unlikely to be killed by fall damage alone.
