Stay still, so I can connect the dots.

—Ranger wounding an enemy

I'd take your dog-tags, but there's no market for baby bracelets.

—Ranger killing an enemy

Ranger looks exactly the same as in Quake, besides improvements to graphics. His A.I. opponent in Quake III Arena favors the Rocket Launcher and Plasma Gun. Also looks for Lightning Gun if the skirmish map has it.

Biography[]

Manual biography

Originally a slipgate explorer, the man called Ranger has faced and escaped certain death a thousand times on a thousand worlds. His experiences have left him more alien than human now.

Profile

After saving the earth during the Slipgate Affair, Ranger embarked upon an endless travelogue of blood and destruction. Now that he's ended up in the Arenas, he is resigned to his future of eternal combat. He enjoys a good challenge and becomes nasty if his opponents are weak.

Prima Guide biography

Ranger has paid the ultimate sacrifice for his world. Trained to protect the Earth at all costs and dedicated to no other task. Ranger was sent through slipgate after slipgate, from world to world, and from battle to battle. He survived, partly by luck and mostly by skill. After so many battles, there is little of the original man left. Even his real name is gone. He knows his world is safe, but he also knows there is no way back home. He is resigned to his fate in the Arena Eternal, and while it's not what he would have chosen for himself, he knows that this is his destiny, and he is determined to survive.

Ranger loves both the rocket launcher and the plasma gun. He tends to go for the rocket launcher more often, but he's just as likely to use either if he's got them both. When it's available to him, he also likes to go for a railgun. Ranger is much more likely to throw an insult your way, and even if you peg him with a good shot, most of his praise is of the back-handed sort.

Trivia[]

  • Like Doomguy, Ranger's bot makes references to Quake such as "I'm surrounded by Quake minions. Laying down suppressing fire." and "Where have the portals taken me now?". In chat lines, he also gets mentioned as "Quaker", "Q Dude", "Frag-Licker" and "Old Timer".
  • After the tutorial, Ranger is the first challenge the players face in the single player campaign, fought in a duel on the Arena Gate.
    • In his arena reside the statues of Visor and Major, likely because his arena was designed to house Major at first in the demo build of Q3A.
  • He has a different voice than in Quake , due to not being voiced by Trent Reznor but by a Soundelux voice actor instead.
  • He shares his model and voice with Wrack.
  • In Quake Live, his team skins entirely lack blood and gore.
