The Forcefield in Quake II is a transparent barrier that is often contained in a frame. Strogg use them as security devices to prevent access to certain areas, protect against unauthorized access to military items (such as Keys, Data CD, Security Pass), weapons, supplies or to hold captured human marines. Forcefields block movement and gunfire, but can be seen through, allowing Strogg to be alerted to the player.
Mainly, the player must complete secondary objectives to turn off the forcefields in the same area or must explore the connected areas and return to the restricted area to continue with the previous objectives.
There is sometimes a way to turn forcefields on and off, such as by pressing a nearby button. If a player or Strogg is standing in the way of a forcefield as it activates, they will be instantly killed. This can happen to the player at the Bio-Maintenance Chamber in Ground Zero's Ammo Depot, and the DNA scanner in Waste Disposal, as well as some places where the button to activate or deactivate a forcefield is right next to its frame, such as in the Upper Palace. Even an Invulnerability power-up or the "god mode" cheat don't protect a player from this form of death.
