Scalebearer

Scalebearer, a Griess

Blood or fuel, councilors.
Blood or fuel, my chiefs!

—Greiss War Council greeting, Quake Champions comic

The Greiss are an alien race obsessed with conquest and fueling the war machine of their empire known as the Greiss Dominion. Greiss are large humanoids with a chitnous exoskeleton that protect their bodies like a natural suit of armor.

Background[]

Little is known about Griess history outside of Scalebearer's story in Quake Champions. Around the same time as the events of Quake, the Griess Dominion forces under Scalebearer had conquered a race known as the Uurd and warred with the Melem, a human-like species. Between this point and 2065, according to Strogg & Peeker's story, the Griess encountered the Strogg, and many of their kind were captured and stroggified, becoming the main forces fought during Quake II and Quake 4.

Organization[]

Culture[]

If you are not the blood that is spilt in Griess conquest, then you are only fuel for the war-machine. Blood or fuel, Scalebearer.

—Greiss War Council, Quake Champions comic

What little is known about the Griess Dominion's culture mirrors the Strogg greatly, with both cultures being focused on war and expansion. The Griess Dominion is bent on conquering worlds and expanding its empires, and to fuel this punishes failure greatly. Commanders who suffers defeat in combat are either executed or sentenced to exile, with those under their command sacrificed to "fuel the war-machine". The exact notion of this is unclear, but the Quake Champion comics depicts this as the prisoners being thrown into a pool of lava-like liquid with tentacles coming out of it. Similar depictions were used in the comic for when Ranger killed Shub-Niggurath in Quake.

The Griess Dominion is ruled by a war-council upon their ship, the Griess Paterwarren.
