The Inner Chamber is the penultimate level of Quake II. It is the inner sanctum of the Makron, the most powerful of the Strogg warlords, who has assumed command of the entire planet.
The area features a few final surprises for the unwary intruder, as well as a huge teleporter device that allows the Makron to retreat to its personal orbital hideout.
Meanwhile, Cerberon is under renewed TCM bombardment, yet the fate of the war will be decided here, between one man and one Strogg.

Walkthrough
Just as you emerge from the teleporter located on top of the Upper Palace, you will see a hallway that splits into two hallways; collect the Body Armor in the right hallway. You will arrive at a massive door. Approaching the door will trigger a set of five laser beams to blast the door open; keep well back to avoid being caught in its path, until the lasers have ceased.
Proceed on to find an elevator, but look for the nearby ammo stash before heading upward - consisting of two Bullet crates, one box of Rockets, one crate of Slugs, one of Shells and one of Cells). On the upper level, you will see a forcefield blocking the central path. Follow around in either direction to see moving platforms over a lava pit, with two Iron Maidens on a central platform. After killing these two, notice the buttons at the end of each moving platform - you must press both to deactivate the forcefield, but be careful not to fall into the lava as you jump to reach them - there is no way to escape if you fall.
With the forcefield deactivated, the elevator to the Chamber roof will be open to you. You will be standing face-to-face with the Makron; however, he is standing on a teleporter, and as you approach him he will teleport away to his secret base on the asteroid belt.
To use the teleporter yourself, you must first press four buttons in this area - start with the two nearest the elevator, but be careful to avoid the lasers protecting them. Pressing each of these two buttons will cause a trio of Flyers to appear, so have a suitable weapon ready. Once both buttons are pressed and all the Flyers are defeated, proceed to the two buttons behind the teleporter to finish reactivating it. You are now ready to step in and face the Supreme Boss of Quake II.
In the 2023 remaster, a Quad Damage will appear by the teleporter which wasn't present in the original game. This is presumably to compensate for the fact that the battle walker piloted by the final boss has much more health than it did in the original game.

Differences in the PSX version
- Different enemy count (see above), notably several Gladiators and Tanks that were not present in the PC version.
- The level is accessed from Defense Command rather than Upper Palace, since the City unit is not included in the PSX campaign.
- There is no Body Armor at the start of the level.
- The platforms leading to the buttons to deactivate the force field don't move, making the endeavour less risky.
Trivia
- In the PSX version, the Makron seems to count as being "killed" for the purposes of the kill count.
