Somebody shut that place down.

The Lower Palace is the central hub of the Palace city. It features numerous opulent hallways, a number of maintenance rooms, and a large central chamber with a supercomputer.

The computer is needed for the reprogramming of the Data Spinner, in order to disable the Strogg communications laser.

Numerous security measures are active throughout the area, such as locked doors, lasers and force fields. It takes some time and exploration to deactivate most of these devices.

Secrets

  • #1) If you take the lower entrance to this level (via the sewers), you will spawn into a room with Guards and Berserkers. Blow up the explosive barrels where the Guards were located, it will blow open a section of wall to the right of them. This secret path leads to an Adrenaline, a Power Shield and a Blaster Trap. This area can also be reached by crawling under the bars in the corridor above, near the switch to disable the red forcefields, although going that way will expose you to the Blaster Trap before reaching the items.
  • #2) If you take the main entrance to this map, you will be in a large, wide open lobby-type area containing a Quad Damage atop a tall pillar. To retrieve it, shoot the two Strogg murals on the walls nearby.
  • #3) In the main computer room (where you must use the Data Spinner and Data CD), head to the right path that leads downstairs; you will eventually come to the lower entrance to the next map, Upper Palace. Across from this exit, however, there is a small room containing a couple of enemies, along with the switch to disable/open the Green security doors. To the left of this button, there is a long slab of wall that is jutting out. This is a switch; press it to open a secret compartment just outside of the room, containing Rockets, Grenades, Jacket Armor and a Megahealth.
  • #4) Go back to the main computer room and this time head to the path on the left at the intersection, which leads upstairs. When you clear out the Berserker and Tank Commander, you will come across a long hallway with a Blaster Trap at the end. There is a shootable button just above the trap that will temporarily bring up a wall in front of it, allowing you to run past it unscathed. However, if you look really closely at the wall just across from where the Tank Commander stood, you will see a small, square section of wall that looks a bit recessed. Shooting this will permanently disable the Gun Trap; doing this counts as the secret. Note: this secret does not exist on Easy difficulty; there is no gun trap, and therefore no hidden button to deactivate it.
  • #5) Just past the Gun Trap hallway, you will come to a room with Guards, a Berserker and a Tank Commander, an elevator that takes you to the main entrance to Upper Palace, and a small path to the right of it that contains a pair of Technicians, a set of double doors that leads to the balcony overlooking the main computer room, as well as a wall with what looks like a computer panel of sorts on it. Shoot this wall to open it, revealing a secret path leading to two small health boxes and some Rockets.
  • #6) THIRD VISIT: Just past Secret #1, you will eventually come to a room with a ladder that leads up to an alcove that is blocked by a Yellow Forcefield. After deactivating these forcefields in Upper Palace, come back to this alcove to net your secret, as well as a bevy of Health and Ammo. To deactivate the Yellow Forcefields, you will need to get the Security Pass from the lower entrance to Upper Palace, come back through this map, then take the main entrance to Upper Palace to actually get to the room the Security Pass opens to disable the forcefields. This is the route that needs to be taken as the two halves of Upper Palace are separated by the Yellow Forcefields.

Bugs

  • In the original game, this level contained a missing kill on all difficulty settings except Easy. A Technician is meant to appear in the corridors above the main supercomputer when the player returns to this level from the Upper Palace, but fails to spawn into the level correctly, resulting in the player being unable to achieve 100% kills. This missing kill is corrected in the 2023 Remaster.
