Medals are small symbols of achievement that players can earn in Quake III Arena, its expansion Team Arena, and Quake Live for performing certain feats in combat. When a medal is earned, its logo is displayed on the screen and a voice announces the medal's name.

In Quake III, the Single Player campaign keeps a permanent record of all medals earned by the player, which can be reset through the options menu. Their cumulative count can be viewed in the campaign screen. Medals can be earned in Skirmish and Multiplayer games as well, however they are not included in the permanent record.

In Team Arena, a record of earned medals is kept for each individual map in the Single Player campaign - they can be viewed by selecting the specific map in the campaign screen. Medals earned in Skirmish and Multiplayer games are not recorded.

Certain medals can only be earned in the Single Player campaign mode.

Individual Medals

These represent individual achievements and can be earned in all game types.

Individual Medals
Q3M Excellent
Excellent Earned for scoring two frags within 2 seconds. This is the most common medal type, especially in games with more players and/or bots. Killing multiple enemies within a short time can earn you several of these simultaneously.
Q3M Impressive
Impressive Earned for two consecutive hits with the Railgun. This medal is a testament to the player's skill due to the accuracy and concentration required to earn it.
Q3M Humiliation
Gauntlet Earned every time you frag an opponent with the Gauntlet.
The in-game announcer will say "Humiliation" every time you earn this medal.
Q3M Frags
Frags (Single Player only)
You earn one for every 100 frags in your permanent record, i.e. 1000 frags will earn you 10 of these.
Q3M Perfect
Perfect (Single Player only)
Earned for completing a battle without being fragged even once. This is another symbol of superior player skills.
Q3M Accuracy
Accuracy (Single Player only)
Earned for completing a battle with accuracy of 50% or higher (i.e. at least half of your shots hit an enemy). This is a relatively hard medal to earn, due to the hectic nature of battles.

CTF Medals

These can only be earned in Capture the Flag games, as well as One Flag CTF, Overload and Harvester games in Team Arena.

In classic Quake III, no record is kept of these medals, since CTF games are not included in the Single Player campaign (they are always treated as Skirmish games). In TA, these medals are recorded for each individual map, but only in the Single Player campaign.

CTF Medals
Q3M Capture
Capture Earned every time you score, i.e. you successfully capture the enemy flag. In TA, this is also awarded for capturing the White Flag, destroying the enemy Skull Obelisk (in Overload games) or successfully bringing skulls to the Skull Receptacle (in Harvester games).
Q3M Assist
Assist Earned for helping your team capture the enemy flag - by carrying the enemy flag for a while (before being fragged) followed by a teammate picking up the flag where you dropped it, helping your teammate grab the enemy flag from their base, or by returning your own flag if it has been grabbed by the enemy.
Q3M Defense
Defense Earned for defending your base and flag carrier - by fragging enemy players/bots near your team's flag, or near a teammate who is carrying the enemy flag.
