I had a dream about this, where Seth shouted: "He's GAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!" Raadec committed suicide afterwards and you, me, Dino (Deathstalker), and Seth all attended the funeral. You were drunk and taking a piss nearby the grave (nasty, I know), Dino was balancing an apple on his nose while trying to eat it. I was standing still, and Seth was laughing at Raadec's mourning family. He then proceded to kick grass all over the place and laugh like a crazy.
Seth appeared as he is on Facebook. Dino appears as he is when I webcam him. Vork, you looked like a a guy going bald a bit, pale skin, and thick glasses. Raadec, you were white with black hair that was swerved. I could tell you were gay or queer right from the getgo.
I am about to be active on the Heretic Wiki again, and there is another guy there who is being very helpful. I think it would be nice to promote him to Admin, but I can't do that since I'm not a bcrat.
So I was thinking, if you wish, you can make me a bcrat there as well, so that I won't have to resort to you every time something comes up.
To be honest although Thief was not so 'unknown' as Heretic, if someone asked me a few years ago if there would ever be a new Thief game I would have replied with a hard NO.
Of course no doubt that Dishonoured brought Thief into the spotlight which possibly helped in the decision to reboot the series.
But anyways my point is that while it seems very impossible that someone would pick up Heretic for a reboot like what is currently happening with DOOM, you can never say never.
Worst thing is though it will be a reboot, which would be cool since an updated struggle with three new Serpent Riders would be cool. But it would not continue where PoP left of. I always imagined the three souls of the riders being combined some other way into a single Serpent Rider. But like I say... Never Say Never.
Oh, this is a good idea indeed. In fact, they did something similar in Diablo III (all evils combined into one Prime Evil), and it would be lovely to see the power of three Serpent Riders into one super-evil being.
The big challenge would be to preserve the original spirit of the series.
It would be DOOM3. DOOM3 tried to keep the original spirit of the original with updated graphics. Now although they failed greatly in some respects, they still made a great game.
The world of Heretic always felt more colourful though so it would not get away with dark and shadows like DOOM3. But if it kept the iconic weapons like the Crossbow and Dragonclaw, and had Iron Liches and *gulp* Maulotaurs, it would be a superb game.
I've been playing Wolfenstein (2009) these days and I can say that the game is awesome in terms of art and design (and it stays true to its direct predecessor, RtCW), but from a gameplay perspective, there is way too much CoD influence, which is probably why many people felt it was disappointing.
So Raven are evidently capable of recreating the good old spirit, but they have to find a good balance between oldschool and modern. I'm pretty sure they won't repeat the mistake of using the "take cover" system ever again.
I'd love to fight some hi-res 3D maulotaurs... or see what an Iron Lich's tornado would look like in a modern engine.
The Maulotaur's fire snake should smash through anything, including walls and floors. Imagine trying to escape a cathedral with his fire snake attack coming at you from nowhere only to arrive at the courtyard to find nowhere else to run and so with no other choice, you fight the behemoth head on.
Unfourtantly if this were to happen, the intitial chase would be QTE where the fire snakes just miss you but are made to make you feel like you almost got hit. Just special effects like a movie.
Tell me how many times has a game from the past 10 years given you the same freight and sense of fear and excitement as you got when you come across a non-boss Maulotaur and run away down a corridor only to look back and see it closing in on you?
To be fair I did play Arkham Knight and overall it is a good game. And there is a boss that when you attack it it pursues you endlessly until just manange to get away from it. But as it pursues you it launches almost one-hit-KO blasts at you and is only just a bit slower than you, although this is little help since his range on the attack is a great distance.
But there aren't many.
I think I mentioned that I used to look down on Raven. But in recent years (thanks in part to you), I have come to realise that Raven are actually brilliant but just seem to have fallen ill of their best efforts on some games.
I've always had great respect for Raven - mostly because my first contact with their work was the Heretic/Hexen series and I instantly fell in love with their design style.
In more recent years, I had the chance to try some of their other works, e.g. Jedi Outcast/Academy, Soldier of Fortune, Quake 4, Wolfenstein... and I liked all of them, even if some of them received substantial criticism as well. When it comes to immersive Single Player campaigns, Raven do a great job :)
One of their games that I haven't had the chance to try (but would be interested to) is Mageslayer (1997) - it's some sort of third-person fantasy shooter... from a top-down perspective. It has a dark and evil-drenched story, of course, in the typical Raven style :)
At least Q4 has a real SIngle Player campaign, while Quake Wars is another Quake 3 thing (here are some bots, now fight each other!). I intend to take a look at QW in the near future... at least I could gather some info and impressions, in order to improve our QW-related pages. If I'm not too lazy, that is :P
Speaking of new games to try, I think my Christiams present for this year will be Wolfenstein: The New Order. It's about time :)

Quake3 is everything right about a multiplayer game. Arguably UT99 is better in some respects, but Q3 is overall THE best multiplayer game of all time. Things like Quake Wars and Call of Duty attempt to add more experience by lavishing it with vehicles and what not but at the end of the day Quake3 has everything you need.
It's like putting Ice Cream on Pizza. Both are great things but you don't want them together. Vehicles are great in sand-box games. I actually prefer STALKER a whole lot more because of its lack of vehicles.
I guess one of my reasons for not liking vehicles in FPS games is because one of the biggest things that was talked about in the build-up to Future Perfect was its inclusion of vehicles in the levels. All that talk amounted to a tacky gimmick. Since then vehicles in games such as Killzone have done nothing but break up the action, giving you a number of 'ah crap now I have 10 minutes of this' areas on levels.
Yeah, it's oriented towards team multiplayer... but, for the sake of our great Wiki, I may be willing to endure it. Besides, I did enjoy Team Arena, which is based on team gameplay (much simpler and without vehicles, though).
I am okay with vehicles, as long as controlling them is not overly complicated (and detrimental to gameplay).
To be fair Halo:CE had some great vehicular gameplay. It was very nice to drift around a forest killing enemies with that chain gun. But Quake Wars is a great example of vehicles that are a pain to use and maybe just maybe, it would have been a fun game.
But I won't put you off anymore, after all you are offering to do something I can never do. I even tried Quake Wars again only a few months ago but again stopped playing without actually playing it.
Don't worry - as a Quake fan, I wish to try out all games in the series, even the not-so-good ones. Besides, this is a good chance to get the inspiration to do some work on our QW pages (they really need work).
I think the first FPS with vehicles that I played was Shadow Warrior... it's really funny, when you try to drive a damaged vehicle, your character says "Oooh, must be American-made." :P
Lol, because Americans are a society of new now, old tomorrow. They don't want anything to last because they will always want the latest thing when it comes out. So there is no point in anything, be it cars or gadgets, being built to last ten-years because Mr Cheeseburger will want a brand new car in 6-months because it is newer.
On the topic of the Wiki, we should commence a consistency check and look for grammatical errors. There aren't that many pages when compared to this wiki. We don't want to end up like the Command & Conquer Wiki where everything is poorly maintained and that there are a lot of pages with terrible grammar.
Ah yes, I go there from time to time... apart from the poor spelling and grammar, there are lots of pages containing fan-made/speculative stuff, which is not confirmed by the game canon. There is some canonicity ambiguity as well (like assuming both Tiberian Dawn endings are canon, which is something I strongly disagree with).
One thing I do is to click the Random page button and fix anything wrong that I come across. Not exactly a systematic or efficient method, but it helps :)
Have you seen my blog post about the Disruptor - a hidden weapon from Ground Zero that becomes available only through mods (or the unofficial patch 3.24 that I tried out recently)?
If you haven't, take a look... I will make a proper page about this weapon soon. I'm just wondering how to categorize it? Should it be "cut content"? Or should it be included in the category with the other GZ weapons?
I think it should be listed the same as cut content since it can only be access via unofficial patches and/or cheats.
By all means make a page about it, I did the same for the bomb you can get via cheats. It is similar to the one you create and use to blow up the Gravity Well but you can use it in game. It's only available through cheating and so can not be considered a GZ weapon, just like the Disruptor, but it's nice to have information on items/weapons like this to bring a full picture of Quake.
That weapon looks very cool though. Does it make the same sound as the Widow's homing balls?
Still working on it. I just need to keep doing what I'm doing and then I will be put on a course. When that happens everything will be going forwards. Just need to prove I am ready for it.
One thing I learnt from my exams in school is that you can worry about them now, but as soon as next week is over and it's finished, you don't need to worry. Whatever happens happens. What this means is that you need to do your best now because no matter how stressed things get, it will be over sooner than you think and then you can relax.
Well I used to be a Laboratory Manager but I moved back with my parents and now work in a shop. It may seem like a down grade but it is more financially sound. My old job was more interesting but I have the experience to find another like it if I decide to go back to it.

It's never easy going from the comfort of school to the unknown of working and living away from home for the first time. But just do your best and you will get out what you put into it. But naturally, get the exams out of the way first. No sense to get ahead of yourself.
It's okay, sometimes you don't know what you are going to get with communities. Some wikias might have an "elite team" which expects that only they can edit and nobody else should touch it (which, in essence, is the exact opposite of what a wikia is all about). Not sure if it is true, but I could see it happening if unregulated and if certain types of people gained too much power.
Exactly. What is the point of a wikia, a place everybody can edit, if not everybody can edit? Note, this is hypothetical, I have yet to actually meet a community that extreme. I am just saying that with the large expanse of wikias out there, one is probably done in such a style.
Oh, that happens everywhere that people are allowed to have such a freedom. With the good humans, like yourself that wish to edit, come the bad trolls that seek to destroy. Similar to democratic law, you can have your freedoms taken away if you abuse them (such as with prisons and whatnot, so us admins are basically the police though we also have the cooperation of the civilians). Such would be similar with the wikia. Good editors have freedom, vandals lose their freedom due to proving their inability to responsibly possess such freedom.
Pop-ups? If you are logged in, you shouldn't be getting them by default (one reason why you should create an account, which you have done)!
If you go to the button near the top of your screen with your name, you should get a list of options. The second one down will be "My preferences". On the tab you are redirected to, you should see a section labeled "Appearance". Look for the option "Ads" and ensure that the drop-down menu is set to "Don't show all ads". Make sure to save if you change anything by using the little gold button at the bottom.
I think we should make all the little words in words that people will know. Think this as a beginner book for Quake players. For example, Grenade Launcher. Sometimes in this wiki it is referred as GL. Most people won't know what that is straight away. You know what I'm saying?
Absolutely. If you see any initializations like that, get rid of em! I personally never believed in them, they were probably added by other users too lazy to write the full word. But I understand you fully.

Heh, I got it working. That makes me a great admin apparently :P. Hopefully my stuff still works, I did change a bit around after my old router failed. As explained elsewhere, my internet has been rocky lately. I believe I have it fixed after changing around the wires and whatnot. We need to test out Q1 sometime.
Guess what - now could be a good time to resurrect the ol' Heretic Wiki.
Recently, I saw that the admin of the Doom Wiki was interested in getting links and other collaboration from a Wiki that is focused on Her/Hex series. The main reason for that is that Hex2 and Her2 can't really fit in Doom Wiki (they are Quake engine). So he went to some wiki, which is pretty much abandoned.
So, I talked to him and convinced to take a look at what we did - and he liked it. So he will probably be interested in some mutual linking, especially for stuff related to Hex2/Her2 (which can't be put on DW).
If you're up to it, we can try to do some more work over there and give the Heretic Wiki some life. Hopefully, other fans will notice it eventually and come along... I got some inpiration and created a few new pages today - you can take a look at them.
I'm up for that. It's clear from the spikes in Quakewiki's history that when we all put in the effort at the same time many good things happen all at once.
I thought our wiki was based on all Her/Hex games, not just the second instalments.
I'd like to be based on monster pages, if you don't mind. It's what I enjoyed the most on Quakewiki.
I recently found a site that has all of the Heretic and Hexen sprites. So no need to bother with taking screenshots in game. But do you think there would be a problem in using someone's ripped sprites?

Try all playable classes - each of them has something cool that is worth seeing (and experiencing). The Cleric's fourth weapon is simply fearsome (you probably remember Traductus's ghost attack). And the Mage has a really efficient way of helping enemies "chill out."
By the way, some time ago I made a review for the Hex2 expansion on the Mobygames site - you can see it here. There were no reviews for it, so I filled the gap :)
I am still thinking about the expansions. It would be good to play them.
I started Hexen 2 again some time ago as the Scout but I actually got a bit fed up with her cross bow. I missed the Warror's sword. Now I'm well into Hexen as the Warrior so I can't really quit and start again as someone else :(
Sounds good. But I can barely remember the puzzles, never mind the secrets. I really enjoyed HerHex first time through. It must be me but I think it's one of those games where it takes time to want to play again.

Fighter, of course - smashing ettin heads with my fists feels very satisfying. Besides, he is the fastest-moving of the three classes (this makes long jumps easier too).
I've also played the Mage a lot - his first weapon is very accurate, almost like a sniper rifle. You can take out enemies from great distances. The Cleric has a few unique and interesting options, but he is the class I've played the least. His biggest advantage is the poison gas attack (from flechettes) - powerful and debilitating, it can bring down even some of tougher foes. It is similar to the gas clouds released by some mushrooms, I'm sure you've seen them.
Hey Raadec! For once I got around to doing some stuff on the Wikia, and I fixed up some pieces of the News template (The main page was fixed by a staff member). Still, there is another glitch that I wonder if you might know how to fix. It seems a border appears when you hover over the bottom corner. It seems to be coming from the news piece of the template, but what is causing it is a mystery to me. Any ideas?
It will now be easier for me to visit the Wiki and do stuff while at the office, due to some recent rearrangements. Previously, my desk and monitor were put in such a way that everyone could see them... but now they have been moved to a spot without any direct visibility, so I can come here more often without attracting unwanted attention :)
I think you are handling it correctly. Limit it to his profile page, it should be fine. The profile page I see as being a page for whatever the user wants (personal preferences, ect.) If he wishes to use it for promotion, so be it. The only time it would become an issue is if it became pages on the wikia, as that means it goes against the rules to have no pages for personal reasons. A user page is a personal page, so this is fine.
It isn't the visiblity of the screen here, just the crunch times. No sooner do I get done with one, another thing starts. I can't wait for the summer, where I hope to have some time to spare to the wikia (depends if I make it to Quake on my list of things to do). If not, my next year should not be too crazy, and in fact should be a bit easier than this year. Hopefully that means I can make a comeback at some point (where I plan to get very detailed into Quake's material, and will not get a setback like I did previously due to more stable conditions).
I am currently awaiting to find out if I have a job after April. If I do then I'll be confirmed the job for a whole year (to April 2014). If I don't, well I'll be a free man on May 7th this year. Obviously the outcome will drastically determine whether or not I become active again in the near future.
It doesn't need saying that if I do get a 1 year extension to my job, it will be a very long time until I am active again. But it does not matter in the big picture as the Wiki is in excellent hands with you guys.
Anyway, I hatched some more Q2 level screenshots and they will be inserted in fresh new level pages later today. Taking good shots in Q2 is a bit more challenging because the industrial architecture doesn't offer as much variety as in Q1. Still, there is a certain feel of aesthetics even in the darkest toxic waste dump.
Yeah, as Death said, crunch times can be tough. I have a pretty large project on my head - technical translation, which can be very nasty sometimes because it requires lengthy research to understand some of the terms or abbreviations. But that won't stop me!
Well, we can only hope for the best. Vork has been doing a great job, as has the new admin and the other users (spam is quite regulated these days it seems, impressive when before it was up to either me or Raadec to detect it).
I honestly cannot wait to play 90's games a lot more than I have. When I do get there, I plan to focus heavily on the Quake games. It is a question of when I am getting there (which in turn is based on the free time I have, more free time the faster I will be getting through my "to do list" of games to play.
My gaming has been a bit limited since the problems with my keyboard began. I would love to dedicate some time to my beloved Doom, but I'm constantly worried the arrow keys might betray me (and break down permanently).

Ugh, I know the feeling. Imagine doing stuff on Quake without having a working Q key. That was me on Quake wikia (had to either copy and paste, or use the virtual keyboard).
Even this computer was originally a headache with a mouse and keyboard. I originally tried getting a basic combo pack, yet each time they would fail in a few days. I decided instead of going for cheaper packs and getting bad results I would go a little higher and get an eighty dollar set. I am quite impressed with the results, no flaws in two years. Also, even though it runs on batteries I think I have had to replace my batteries once (pretty impressive when I spend a lot of time writing papers, going on the wikia, playing games, ect on this computer).
I really can't wait to touch Doom (plan to do it before getting back to Quake, like I did before but with a different perspective). After that it shouldn't be long before getting into the Quake series!
Also, I just checked my Youtube channel for the first time in a year. Apparently I have a tip involving E4M6 that I am curious to verify. Apparently it might be the only level where five powerups can be activated at once: Bio-Suit (outside secret), Pentagram (secret), Ring (in water), Quad-Damage (beginning), and 100 Health (beginning).
Now I need to see if any other levels do this...
EDIT: I have found E4M4 to do this as well (he probably plays on a higher difficulty as this only works on Easy).
E4M7 also works (though going from the Biosuit to the Pentagram wastes most of the powerup, it expires almost after picking up the Quad Damage in the Pentagram room.
I got the Doom 3 BFG Edition for PS3 the other week. Doom was before my time as you may recall my first FPS games were Quake II and Jedi Knight. I am having so much fun blasting through the levels (I'm half way though Doom II now). In some ways Doom is greater than Quake. I can't believe I've waited so long to get it.
Vork, the Q2 level pages are superb. You've done a really great job with them. Don't take this the wrong way but in some of the levels I would have chosen different screenshots but that's more do with opinion as there isn't a right or wrong answer for something like this. But in any case it's fantastic.
Also I realise this might morally force you two to demand my resignation from QuakeWiki but I decided after something thinking to buy a CoD game. I ended up buying Black Ops and since I'm a fan of all the Killzone games, I actually liked BlkOps. However I do not have any intention of buying another CoD game since I chose BlkOps because it seemed to be the best one from what I heard and I can't be bothered one bit to try the MW trilogy or the older games. Be gentle.

Hey, don't worry - I have played CoD as well. The first game in the series is pretty decent, especially the Soviet missions (I love urban environments in games). It has plenty of Nazis to shoot :P
You are right - most levels in Q2 have several good spots for shots. I tried to select locations which will look nice even as the smaller image in the Infobox... I hope they can compel the reader to click and see the full-size image as well.
I'm thinking of getting that BFG edition as well - especially because it features 9 awesome bonus levels for Doom II ("No Rest for the Living"). I'd love to blast my way through them. I've read that the newer development revisions of zDoom have innate support the new WAD file.

I really recommend BFG. I actually bought it because I felt like playing Doom 3. Only when I got in the car did I read the blurb on the back and realise that it contained Doom and Doom II. Needless to say, I was over the moon.
I'm not one to buy games, despite how many I play. I have attained a few (slowly) over the last 15 years and the ones I have keep me busy. But I have been branching to new games recently thanks mostly to PS1classics on PSN. Last week I've tried Silent Hill and Castelvania. Once I get my PSP working on the wifi I'll have a lot fun with the latter. It looks so cool on the PS3.
Talking of Playstations, I don't think we've ever discussed consoles. What do you guys have/want? I for example have a PS2 and PS3 and I want a PS4.
I guess I'm a hybrid. I like FPS games on the PC but I also really enjoy FPS on consoles. I think it really depends on what kind of game it is. I really like the mouse for the older games (run and shoot) and I like the control pad for modern ones that require ducking for cover and peering down iron sights. Of course it's just my opinion but I am glad that I like both. It's all good.
Jedi Knight will always be my favourite game but Quake II is my favourite FPS because I find myself comparing modern games to Q2, and in many cases wishing they were more like Q2.
Yes I think so. On Hard+ that particular placement can be quite difficult. It's taken me a couple tries to get behind it and kill the Enforcer sometimes. And I'm a veteran (perhaps I wasn't fully awake at the time :\).

On some of the earlier pages the Infobox included info about what enemies are present in the level. I think it would be more useful to replace this with the number of enemies per difficulty (the way it is done with Q1 levels). The Wiki will be more consistent this way.
Next - The Reckoning! As for Ground Zero - most of the current screenshots are good and can be kept. A few can probably be replaced with something better. We'll see... soon.
There's not really a right or wrong answer with something like this. As long as none of them are too dark or aimed straight at a brick wall, I can't see any reason they'd need replacing. Don't get me wrong, if you want to replace any then that's of course fine.
I still haven't played Ground Zero since finishing Reckoning in Summer last year. But it's been so long since I played Quake 2 that I feel like skipping GZ and going straight back to Q2. Strange eh?
Mmmm yes. Sometimes I start playing something with great enthusiasm, then suddenly abandon it for a few weeks and get back to it later. It's weird.
Actually, there is only one picture that I want to change about GZ - it's the one for Research Hangar. I think a view of the huge lava-filled canyon would be pretty beautiful. Besides, that Strogg spacecraft doesn't look very impressive from behind, I can add an extra picture of it from the front. The shots for the other levels are okay, so I won't touch them :)
Then, I'll just have to make shots for the remaining levels that don't have pages yet... there are just a few of them left.
Also at the moment we have pages for the Palace, Big Gun and Black Hole Generator. Do you think we should keep these and continue making more (eg. the Hangar, Jail, Mines) or do you think we should combine the info with the level pages (eg. Big Gun info on the Unit 7 page/Big Gun page)?
also; Off topic, I have just completed Doom and Doom II for the first time. Before I did so I had read and heard that the Cyberdemon was the most difficult and powerful ID enemy ever. Even though he is greater than the Hornet, Tank Guardian, I think Armagon and Dragon are more difficult. The Maulotaur is even more powerful and harder to beat than all of these together. Then you have the Black Widow Guardian.
All in all, the Cyberdemon is not as great as I thought.
I think we can keep the separate pages for the sake of variety. For example, this page describes the Big Gun from the perspective of the in-game lore and as a part of the Strogg civilisation, whereas this page is about the specific in-game level called "Big Gun" (with a walkthrough and other specific details). The variety of pages makes it easier for the reader to find the exact type of info they are looking for.
We can probably make similar lore-perspective pages about other significant areas as well (e.g. the Jail complex). They could be interesting to the readers and enrich the Wiki experience :)
As for the Cyberdemon - the secret to its reputation as the nastiest iD enemy ever is the atmosphere of fear surrounding it. It is designed with the idea of stunning the player with horror and confusion when they encounter a Cyber for the first time (preferably in E2M8 of Doom).
I remember I was pretty terrified when I reached this level for the first time... and the big guy killed me many times before I could defeat him :P
The nearest I got to that feeling was fighting Yun in Jedi Knight for the first time. After 6 levels of shooting weak enemies you are put in a small room with a Dark Jedi. Then a few levels later, still feeling the pain from that first lightsaber duel, you find yourself up against not just one Dark Jedi, but two of them at the same time.
Also I've started playing GZ again. My last save was October 27th :D So now I will complete GZ and then see if I want to replay Q2 soon after.
I'm playing on Hard - I usually have a deficit of shells and bullets, so I try to introduce some variety by using the grenade launcher more often.
The Jorg - yeah, it's speculation. I have actually seen this mentioned on other sites as well. Some people even think that the Raven design team were the ones who mistakenly took the Jorg for the Makron (if they weren't familiar enough with Q2 before starting to work on Q4). Or maybe they did it deliberately (because the Jorg looks more impressive)? Nobody knows for sure.
I hope to be able to make some screenshotting for Q3 and Q4 in the future. Q4 will be a bit more problematic because it only runs on the desktop computer at home, and I'm not always able to get to it (since others use it as well), but at least Q3 works just fine on my old laptop, so I can play it any time.
Whew, I finished one monstrous project today - imagine a document with totally messed-up layout. Every time you start writing somewhere, the rest of the text goes crazy and starts bleeding in all directions. I'm so glad it is finally over :)
Yeah, the lighting in Q2 can be a little tricky. Maybe you should try to take the pictures in outoodr areas - they are well-lit, but also a bit yellow-ish (in GL renderer), to create the impression of being under an alien sun.
Lol. I'm guessing the Daedalus won because that thing is tough as shit. Is it just me or do green lasers flythrough the air faster?
The turrets are so tough and so deadly and so annoying, it is the only enemy in 90's era FPS that I've come across where I feel it is ok to corner-rape them. Corner-rape is when you peer around a corner just enough to shoot them but they can't shoot you back.
Every time I play GZ I think, oh yeh, I beat the Carrier and Black Widow many times now, they won't be a problem. But every single time those two enemies beat the shit out of me over and over again. Both of them (but the widow in particular) have got to be one the most difficult bosses ever in all FPS.
Other good example of annoying - enemies that latch onto you. A good example are the spiders and leeches from Blood 2: The Chosen - not only are they hard to get rid of, but they also blur or darken your vision, disorienting you.
You could be right about the green lasers - I find them a bit harder to dodge than the ordinary ones.
When I play on a console, it is mostly for the Gran Turismo series on the Playstation. Otherwise I am mainly a computer gamer.
Doom is a good game, but the initial enemies have become easy. I ended up using mods that boosted their health to try and make the fight last a bit longer.
Remember, the Cyberdemon is the most powerful iD enemy ever. Even though the expansions were published by iD, they were not designed by iD. Thus the Dragon and Armagon does not count (I think that the BWG is also an expansion enemy, though I could be wrong). I wouldn't say iD makes that tough of a game, but sets the scene for others to follow. It will be interesting to see bosses in FPS games again (1979 only has them in RPG games).
ID has some involvement with the expansions although you are right as they didn't develop the them. If we only count the original games then yes, the Cyberdemon is the best. Not even the Makron is in the same league and don't even bother mentioning Quake (gee wiz). I've never ever touched Wolfenstein 3D but Hitler can't be all that, can he?

I did increase the brightness. I played around with it to get the best lighting for the portraits (it’s not on max) and although the setting I settled on was maybe ‘too’ bright, I chose it because it ‘was’ bright. Thanks for the compliment, I guess that sealed the deal, non-GL it is. I won’t ask Death for an opinion because he knows Quake 2 like I know how to ride a horse. And yes, the black widow is in an expansion ;)
I played Doom on the 3rd difficulty, that was quite a challenge but I won’t be up at your level.
I was up until 0130 this morning playing GZ, I’m not on Unit 3 just entering the sewers.
I just discovered something new about GZ last night - I used to think there were no Mutants at all in the mission pack, but there actually is 1 (exactly one) Mutant somewhere. And the funny thing is that it is hidden very well.
It is located in a secret area at the Maintenance Hangars. It's a very tricky secret because it's at the level start, but it can't be opened until late in the mission. Also, it's hard to spot exactly which wall to shoot, in order to reveal the secret. Once you break the wall, the Mutant charges out and there is a Double Damage inside the secret.
I'll probably have some time for Doom these days - having just completed that super big and complicated project (with lots of staying overtime), my boss gave me 3 days off to recharge my batteries. Just what I needed :)
Funny that, I just closed the game after reaching the Maintenance Hangars. I can't remember, can you return to Waste Processing from the Maintenance Hangars? One of the things to do in this level is prepare for the Carrier in the next. I have left the medium and high armour pick ups in Processing but I don't know if I can get back there before the Carrier. If not then I can reload from my last save in Processing and pick up the armour. It'd be cool to go into the fight with 200 high armour :D
Good luck with Doom, I think it's brilliant. D3BFG includes all the expansion packs for all three games but I haven't touched them yet. I tried the first map of the Doom I expansion and it kicked my ass.
Seems like a lot of work for a double damage. I bet the mutant would be a push over after all those Stalkers.
I remember now about the second vent. I was not 100% sure if it did open. Once I've killed all the Strogg in the Maintenance Hangars, I will return to Processing for the armour I left behind and then pick up the one that I normally save in the Hangars. Plus there's a super health at the start of Processing which I've left. I'll be more prepared than ever before.
In the room in Processing where you destroy the node to disable the red barriers, do you get the game crashing or just a lot of lag, when you use the BFG? There is a lot of enemies in that room, not to mention the Medic Commanders spawning even more, but still strange.
I've defeated the Carrier. I managed to get my 200 points of Body Armor (the top one). After beating the Carrier using the BFG and Chaingun, I went to the start of the level and went through the entire Unit again and managed to get back all my Cells and Bullets and 136 Body Armor points. With the one you get at next to the train, I now have 200 armor points again for Unit 4 :D

It seems shells are the hardest to find type of ammo in GZ. I use the super shotgun a lot in Q2 and TR, but not nearly as often in GZ. I run out of shells pretty fast. Luckily, the ETF cannon can compensate most of the time.
I don't know about that room in Processing - I don't think I've ever used a BFG there before... but I will give it a try and see what happens.
Yeah, Hitler seemed a bit easier than the Cyberdemon as long as you strafe. Then again the Cyberdemon I remember can kick and shoot 3 rockets at once (I spent too much time in Brutal Doom).
I can't wait to get back into games (that are not 5 minute long arcade games from the 70s, time crunching has left me with these quick games so I don't have to dedicate myself with something too long).
On a completely unrelated note: I have gotten my hands on some early D&D materials just to see how far the RPG genre has evolved. What I found is it hasn't evolved at all. So much for creativity!
By the way, guys, I don't know if I have told you this curious fact before - in my native tongue (Bulgarian), we have a word (строг) that is pronounced exactly like "Strogg". It means "harsh", "strict", "austere" and sometimes even "grim".
Surprisingly appropriate, considering the nature of the Strogg :)
When I used the mod, I never managed to get an enemy to do anything because of the flipping off. My favorite thing to do was to go to E3M6 on Nightmare difficulty with 10x the amount of enemies and a metal wad that makes the music more actiony. The Cacodemons shoot pretty fast now, Lost Souls are transparent, and Imps can leap at you. Still, the hardest part is managing ammo supplies. It makes for awesome gameplay! I would have liked to do similar things with E1M1, but could never get past the first room (alerting the left side would start a hoarde coming from the right and some shooting in the windows that would force you into a "survival mode" against anything in the map).
Interesting, maybe iD got some ideas from the Bulgarian language! Also, maybe it's my lack of Q2 experience, but every time I see TR I immediately think Tomb Raider.
D&D is interesting, but there is a LOT to take in. I mean, though it is made to be customized by the player and the things they like chosen, it still seems like a very chaotic subject. Perhaps actually playing it would have simplified it.
The early material had 16 planes, but I am not sure if the player could travel there. I think it was more for enemy types that existed in various planes.
Is there words that sound like Makron in Bulgarian? Interestingly it is the only enemy (as far as I can think of) that has a name like 'Strogg' that means nothing in the English language.
Congratulations on the creation of TR pages. Reading a few, notably the command centre, I thought that perhaps I should re-write the Jorg and Makron pages a little to make it more similar to any other enemy instead of being the ruler/final boss. If you know what I mean.
RPG is a marmite-game for me, in that I like/hate them. I like the idea behind them, getting entrenched in this giant world and you building the power of your character up to defeat the powerful evils that threaten whatever. However the only real big RPG I've ever completed in Final Fantasy 7 and that was almost 3 years ago now. I have tried to play it again but it's very difficult to get into it. It's not like an FPS that will be over in a couple of weeks, you really need to be ready to enjoy it for a very long time.
The Cacodemons are one of my favourite Doom enemies because they have big smiles and before you get too far into Doom they are one of the greatest foes.
The only thing close to Makron is "makaron"... which means pasta. Not very scary :P

Death, have you read Manual of the Planes? It is really cool - it describes a lot of planes, in great detail. All sorts of them - lawful and chaotic, good and evil, etc. The idea is probably to use this info for various campaigns (as there are many locations, villains and other cool stuff in them). The possibilities are almost infinite.
That was all 80s stuff. I am looking more at the 1970's stuff (Monster Manual, The Dragon, ect...) Even here it is very complicated.
RPG games are a love/hate relationship with me too. I like the complexity. Not DnD complexity where it spends pages on numbers, but just the whole world of a large number of creatures (I really love enemies in video games and enjoy new games mostly for the enemies you encounter.)
My problem with RPGs is the whole numbers game. There is no skill, just spend a lot of time playing and you will get higher numbers from various items. I want to have more involvement than just watching my character fight.
Herein I go into a quick description of various RPGs through my eyes------
I have played the original Elder Scrolls and hated the clunky mechanics (Can't explain it, just feels clunky). I beat the first dungeon, then quit when I reached the town only to find I could not do anything because it was nightime.
I have beaten Diablo and thought it decent. The problem was that almost anything could be beaten with a ranged weapon as long as you kept running in circles. Course, the game took a long time of running away from one enemy because my sword was too weak (even though I was a fighter and put all my stats into strength).
I have played Knights of the Old Republic. That is hands down the best RPG I have ever touched, because though based on numbers they did a good job at making it seem less apparent. When I was playing this game I was in the Doom 3 curse (a two to three year curse that meant I would start a game, but refuse to finish it due to a desire to go back to what I was familiar with. It is called the Doom 3 curse because I feel that started it, and it also is what ended it. I had a old computer that could not play it, so I refused to continue due to it ruining the plotline when I upgraded. Things were put off, so even when I upgraded it took two to three years for me to go back to the Doom 3 campaign and beat the game, many games were affected by this "curse" in the meantime.)
I have played numerous browser RPGs (Mafia Wars, Mobsters, Dragons Age, Street Racer, Castle Age, many more that have been shut down that I forget the names of). The format is the same, for a few days you will be starting out slow and buying properties. Then you quit for a month, come back and you have a great amount of cash. I became bored very fast.
I played Pirates Online, but never believed in subscription models because of it forces you to play or waste money. The game was good until they did not allow me to do much more with my character. The best thing was sailing, just being in a small server and sailing was interesting as it felt almost like an adventure.
I have played Planeshift, but the problem with that MMORPG is that they don't show what quests you have, so you easily get mixed up if you multitask.
I have played Perfect World multiple times (but never continued after reaching level 20 or so). The game is good, but the problem is the numbers game eventually starts to bug me.
I played City of Heroes not long before it was shut down. It was just too large, with no real direction or instruction in my opinion. I like exploration, but woul d like to know how to play the game.
Toxic played with me one time in Battlestar Galactica Online, but I didn't like the feeling on flying a ship (I lose my sense of direction in any flight simulator, that is if I manage to stay flying or manage to get off the ground).
Oh god, how many times Toxic tried to get us to play Battlestar online. I like RPG, but MMORPG is a big fat no no for me. I can't think of anything worse than online RPG games. Atleast with games like FF7 (my absolute knowledge of RPG) there is a start and a end. Not with MMORPG, it goes on and on and that is totally gay :\
I just thought, Pokémon is an RPG and so my knowledge also extends to Pokémon Yellow. I do have HeartGold, FireRed, Platinum and Black but Yellow is the only one I know like the back of my hand.
And I only just remembered after reading your post that I also have Elder Scrolls 5... I must be stupid to forget things :(
It was a good game but I got bored before I finished the main story and I racked up far too many side quests to even begin to bother clearing them all.
As for Diablo, I have played an internet game based on Diablo called Darkness Spring. It had a watered down free version which I enjoyed as a kid (2006ish when the internet was still a novelty to me) and I am going to get Diablo 3 for PS4 when it comes out. I like the gameplay a lot.
I think the I know the Doom 3 curse, although I'd call it the Quake 2 curse. All of the Quake 2 games are long and so by the time I get to Ground Zero I get bored of the whole concept of Quake 2. It's happened once in the past and Vork known it happened this time too. I started GZ in October after beating Q2 and TR in August but only now in April am I finishing GZ. Also instead of April I actually started to type February... What the fuck?
I've done monthly subscriptions before. You're right that if you don't play it then you are throwing money down the drain. This counts for all things from games to things like Spotify.
Also I'm not sure if this necessary but it JUST entered my mind while typing this. At the moment I am the only 'active' (using the most pathetic term for active) Bcrat here. If I was to leave for good like Shaleblade and Toxic, then I'd of course have to appoint a Bcrat to take my place. I think there's no doubt it'd be one of you two as Auguststorm isn't as active and Ninga has only just joined us. I'M NOT thinking about leaving but I'M ALSO NOT promising that I'll be here forever so it's something I guess should be thought about even if we don't come to a decision now.

I am a big fan of Diablo, even got my college roommate hooked up on it. I like it because of its simplicity - just get out and hack some monsters. Besides, the artwork is awesome.
The only thing I've veer played online was WoW, though I got tired of it quickly. I am a solo player - just me against the entire evil in the universe. Besides, I'm not always able to have a good and stable internet connection.
About the Bcrat - I don't know. Life is always full of surprises, so maybe we should decide when the time comes ;)
I tried Runescape. I don't care admitting that I started in 2005 and didn't properly quit until 2009. I enjoyed it and I quit many times only to return to it after a few months. But I guess I out grew it and I've never tried another MMORPG since, mainly because by the time I got bored of RS it put me off the whole concept forever.
I've finished Ground Zero today and after my 5th/6th attempt at doing so since getting the game all those years ago, I realised the Black Widow Guardian's real name is just Black Widow ¬_¬ I realised it not just because guardian has a lower case 'g' but also it is referred to as just 'the Black Widow' on ID's site. I remember reading their little overview before I got GZ. I guess I'll change everything that refers to it as the BWG. I don't think it's too much though.
I have a love/hate with mmorpgs like I said. Love them due to their size (and constantly being updated to include more). Hate them due to it getting very repetitious very rapidly (plus a ton of other people kinda makes some plotlines odd if you are the ONLY hero or something).
Still, the multiplayer component is the smallest thing that bugs me. If you don't talk to people, most games will leave you alone. I go on small servers with the least people and try and enjoy myself.
I guess the worst part of RPGs is the lack of interactivity. You cannot fight an enemy, you just sit and watch as you try to kill it. You click and wait for them to reach an NPC. Most of my time in various RPGs was walking from town to town. That gets old when it is required of every quest.
Pokemon is a big fat no for me. I have tried anime, I cannot stand it. That is one reason I disliked Perfect World. No matter how much I changed my character, the NPCs would all be anime. It actually gives me migranes to look at anime for too long. Its a shame, the plotlines sound like they could be interesting if I could get past the drawing style.
I actually have a longer list of RPGs than I mentioned, I just had to post shortly for time and so it could be easily read without consuming half an hour or so.
(Also I agree with Vork's decision to wait on a choice. If we plan too early and things change we would need to rethink everything anyway).
Runescape to me is the worst MMORPG. I like the angle of choice most games give you instead of the top-down of Runescape. Runescape also will have an enemy drop multiple items, yet some of the more valuable are found under the first meaning you have to right click after every drop. Runescape used to start in Lumbridge, then you travel to Varrock only to encounter higher level enemies and you have no idea what to do except waste time leveling (even though I would level 9 levels of Attack, Strength, and Defense fighting enemies in Lumbridge).
Runescape has changed since you left for the worse (I went back earlier this year as I wanted to see exactly how I thought of it). Every new player starts in a village overrun with Trolls and fights in a battle against them. Sounds good, until after the tutorial when everything requires higher level and yet there is little to train your skill. Also, after two weeks if you are still in a member server you cannot access your character. A way around this is by going to Lumbridge by teleportation and switching to a free server, but do they expect a noob to be familiar with all that? Sounds like a scam.
Building up stats can be fun... but you know what I like more? Shopping for exotic weapons.
When I was a kid and played Raptor: Call of the Shadows, one of my favorite things was the cyberpunk-style shop where you go to buy futuristic weapons and other cool accessories for your plane, spending the cash you've earned during the mission.
By the way, I love doing things solo in MMORPGs, especially when they were supposed to be done in a group. In WoW, for example, I would clear a dungeon on my own - it may be a bit more challenging, but all the loot would be for me :)
That was me in an MMORPG. "This is recommended for 5 or more people". I would charge in there and try and do it. At times I would hate myself for my stupidity, I thought it was an FPS where skill actually mattered. You just need to have higher gear than your enemy to win.
Ah yes, gear matters a lot, which is annoying because sometimes players won't let you join them in something due to "too weak gear."
I have observed that the heavily armored warrior types (the so-called "tanks") are usually better at doing stuff solo, so that's why I prefer playing this type of heroes. An enemy was meant to be tackled by 5 players? Meh, just charge him and kick his butt all by myself :)
I guess I have inherited this mindset from shooters, where you do everything alone (and AI-controlled teammates exist only to cause trouble or die from friendly fire).
I prefer the old FPS games where you storm Hell by yourself or destroy the Strogg when all your team mates are dead or captured. Modern games always put you in a squad and even when the A.I is good it's still not as good as doing it by yourself.
Imagine Quake if you had to escort a team! It'd slow down the action by 100% if not more. Quake 2 had it right because in The Reckoning you are apart of an elite team but when you meet up with them they are all killed by a small group of Strogg which you then kill without effort.
After completing Quake 2 last week I now feel like playing Quake :D

I never bothered joining people in MMORPGS, I was the solo tanker/suicide expert.
I hate teammates in games. They keep walking into my fire and dying (making me lose the mission). I miss old school where none exist, or a little newer where they did but it didn't matter if they died. The best team game had to be The Thing. (Either because of how stupid they were or because it is fun to be a one man army against a group of people trying to shoot you down at your command).
Also, I agree with the main page Raadec. The Monster Tournament never really worked, editor of the month was never updated, polls don't seem to do much, and the news isn't really noticable.
You remember quickly enough. I would edit something and feel awkward, but would quickly remember how I would do it.
I can't wait for Quake (video games in general too). Right now they are pushing me worse than usual, I am lucky to have had a few minutes to type. Well, back to these papers.
My idea is to have some sort of a second logo where the picture links are now. Keep the current main logo but then have a larger, picture type logo, maybe with a giant quake logo with Quake Wiki under it. Much like the logo we had in 2009.
Then have the picture links under it where the Introduction is now. Below that have the introduction and then have important links such as the Quake walkthrough. Then have recent activity to the right. Any ideas are welcome.
I have some good news. I have been confirmed work in my R&D job until at least May 2014.
This does of course mean one thing regarding Quakewiki, I won't be active for a long time. I have tried to be semi-active what with the new main page but work that should take days or even hours could take weeks as I'm only able to do it at weekends. And as you might have noticed, I have little time even then to do anything.
I've not been active for a very long time so this news won't affect the wiki with any form of drama but I wanted to let you guys know the my long term plan.
I will work on the picture. I should have known the colour would be wrong but I went a bit too far with it :) I am going to try and make it without any background like the Logo.
I was on a short vacation the last weekend - visited some friends in another city.
It's a bit quiet at work right now, but I think this is the proverbial quiet before the storm. When the time for applying to universities approaches, we'll probably be buried under an avalanche of diplomas and other academic documents for translation. So we're enjoying the calm while it lasts :)
Grrr, I recently heard that Disney shut down Lucasarts. It's a shame because the people working there were hand-picked by George Lucas himself, and they made some pretty good games (especially in the 1990's).
Reminds me of how Westwood Studios died after being bought by EA.
Well, this is what happens when profits become more important than creativity. It's no wonder so many gamers feel nostalgic these days.
That's why CoD is churned out like it is, because profits are number one and the fat cats know that as long as they can think of a great word to put under the title - BLACK OPS! - GHOST - MODERRRN WOREFARCE - people are going to buy it and so execs get rich for next to no effort.
It'd be like releasing Quake, Quake II, Jedi Knight and Unreal on DOS just because it worked so well for Doom.
I am getting a laptop purely as a toy for me to have while I'm away from home. It's better than my desktop, both the processor and graphics card are notably faster and more powerful. This means I'll have all the comforts of home away from home, including internet when I move into my rented room. So I may be working on here a little more often soon. Which will be good because it's clear that I just don't have the time two days a week to do anything substantial on Quakewiki.
I think 1313 would have been worth of a look in. Jedi Knight felt like a mature game back in the day, especially when you're an 6-year-old whose scared of the three-eyed demon people. So following the pretty cartoonish Jedi Outcast/Academy and Battlefront (which I never really liked), it would have been good to play another grown-up Star Wars game. Surely another dev will pick up 1313 and complete sometime in the future.

You are right that JK feels more serious in a way. More imposing. Perhaps even more real than other SW-themed games. I remember I felt fully immersed when I saw it for the first time. The demo level was the refueling station, which is a huge level and shows what the engine is capable of.
The amount of space (albeit empty space) in level 8 of JK is amazing. You get the feeling that if JO had that level remade exactly, it'd probably crash. I think the first game I'll play on my new laptop when I get it next weekend will be JK. I haven't played it since last August when I quickly played JK and MotS during the last weekend before moving house.
As for Quakewiki, I still intend to redo all the Quake II monster pages, including pictures and text. That'll be my first project. Then who knows? I have tried in vain to get into Q3A like I used to as a kid. That will probably be my 2nd game on my new laptop. Also Unreal Tournament 99'... :D
Oh yeah, level 8... the first time I saw it, I could hardly believe this was actual empty space (all previous games I had played before would surely crash & burn if anyone attempted to make such a thing). Of course, I had to test it, so I did several force run + force jump off the roof, landing onto the dark raised platform. No clever optical illusions - that empty space was quite real :)
Of all late-1990's games (the video card transition period), JK seems to be the least problematic. It can run and be played without any special workarounds (on Win XP, at least). Sometimes I get a crash when trying to load a saved game, but it's not very frequent, so it doesn't bother me. By comparison, Quake 2 crashes more often than JK :P
Quake 2 has been problematic for me in the past. However I have whatever it needs in my files on the hard disk to run perfectly. It's been years since I fixed it but what I have on this computer is a bible to fully functional Quake 2 on XP+ (I now have Win7). My upcoming laptop is Win8 and my dad has a duel boot drive where he can switch between 7 and 8. He copied all the files for Q2 onto Win8 and it works perfectly. JK has been less of a problem in the past so that should also work. Of course DF is DOSbox and I can't imagine that'd be a problem no matter OS it's on. As for more modern games, Unreal and Quake 3/4 are no trouble at all, as well as JO/JA. And my desktop can run Crysis on next to and including ultra settings without any lag. As my laptop is even better than my desktop it too should be capable of this. I am however currently having problems with Shadows of the Empire but have not spent any time trying to solve it. I'm sure I've played SotE on this pc as it is now in the past so it can't be too much of a problem.
SotE works for me, but it has two problems: the first is that the "distance fog" does not work, and so the graphics look weird, e.g. distant terrain just cuts off suddenly and distant objects appear abruptly when you approach them (the "fog" is supposed to hide these engine limitations and thus make the game look better).
The other problem (the more annoying one) is that the cutscenes appear somewhat garbled and unusually small in size. It looks very ugly. It's weird because the game's internal video player shouldn't be very different from JK's, and yet it messes things up. I don't know why.
I've had some minor cutscene issues in JK - occasionally, black squares appear on the screen during playback, but they usually disappear after a few seconds. In MotS, everything runs perfectly and I'm glad to say that I have never encountered any bugs (the Dark Side does not tolerate failure).
No it does not. I had the same problem with JK but fixed it somehow. All videos now play in smaller window but this is very acceptable because there are no black dots that appear with every camera change.
For me SotE's cutscenes were completely unwatchable but I changed the video settings and they work. Maybe you need to have a play to see what suits best? (this is when it was working, still not got around to that yet)
I greatly missed Sith when that stopped working. Playing it last year for first time in a long time was a real pleasure. Even the not-so-good levels are mega fun to play. And then you get to those final three gems, the diamond in the rough, the best levels I've ever seen in that era of games. Anyways...
This reminds me of how I got Blood 2 working a few years ago. It needed a few tricks and workarounds, but now it works perfectly, just as in the good old days. This series has a unique brand of dark humor that I really missed :)
I have exactly the same black squares problem with JK's cutscenes. So far I haven't found a way to fix it. But I'll keep trying.
I'm still alive if that's what you mean :) It's been a hectic month. First I was at Tenerife and then I've moved into my rented accommodation. I'm still getting settled in. Me being active is still not a lost cause as I'm still working towards a situation where I will be able and willing to come here on a regular basis anytime I want (24/7) and not just limited to weekends any more. I've had my laptop for a month now but with holidays and moving out of the hotel I've just not had time to sit down after work and do some Quakewiki. Also I'm currently in the middle of Episode 4 with full intentions of playing SoA and DoE. Things should get better faster now.
I've dropped in once in a while and it looks like we're getting a steady stream of edits (the ones I looked at were good). How have you been? Any exciting stories to tell? Any brush ins with Shubby and her hellspawn?
Oh yes, a hectic month indeed. In the second half of June, high school students graduate and we were flooded with diplomas for translation. The pile on my desk was so huge that I could hide in its shadow :)
At last, the pile is gone! Now I am slowly and carefully digging my way through a catalogue for cutting and grinding tools - it's so nicely done that I am tempted to buy one and start grinding random stuff :P
Enjoy Episode 4 - it is my favorite. The style is really nice and with variety. I've had a few quick skirmishes with Shubby's minions and maybe I should have a more thorough playthrough these days (to satisfy my desire for grinding!).
It's really nice that the other folks keep editing - this is the best sign that the Wiki is alive and still has much potential.
You know someone has done a good job when their design and paper quality used in a catalogue pressures someone to buy something from it just because.
I assume you've not heard anything from Death, Ninga or August lately? Everyone's got something else to do :(
Episode 4 is good. If ID had put a little more effort into Quake and not had creative differences within the team over it being a medieval RPG or sci-fi shooter (not unlike Doom) then Quake could have been a lot better. I figure at it's best it could have been a cross between Episode 4 and all of Scourge of Armagon (the latter being what Quake should have been imo).
But even with all this 'what could have been' Quake is still a whole lot of fun, so much so that it is a joy to play from Introduction to Source of Evil.
The Introduction is one of the best ideas in the game - it feels really awesome to choose difficulty and episode like this. Imagine if other options could also be toggled this way - e.g. secret chambers from which you can activate "special features" or even cheats ;)
I haven't heard from the other guys but that shouldn't surprise us - the summer is a weird season. For some it means more work, for others it means vacation. In both cases, they probably don't have much time to come here.
My desk is up now at my second house. Currently playing Scourge of Armagon. The Black Cathedral may be one of the top 3 maps in all of Quake. I think if you made a top 5 level list, all would be from Armagon. Then a top 10 would be mostly Armagon with a few gems from Quake and DoE, such as the Last Ballister
Is there a code of text that can be written into the game to make the CD music repeat after ending while playing? At the moment I have load a level with different music before loading my latest save to get the music to play after it ends.
None of those seem to be what I'm after. Loop seems to be closest but that requires inputting a new command at the start of each level (as well as knowing the # of each track for each level). It's just as much (if not more) effort as loading a level with a different track and then loading the latest save.
It will hopefully be a good time to catch up with a lot of things, including Wiki activities.

Hey guys! Been a bit between moving and working. Wish I could focus on Wiki activities, I haven't even been able to keep up with it lately due to getting a data plan that cuts my internet short (best I can do in my new location).
Even I know that Heretic isn't Doom with a medieval theme! There is an inventory system. From what it sounds like, the game sounds rather interesting and something I would like to play eventually.
Still looking at D&D stuff. I am hoping by reading this I can be more exposed to the world of Baldur's Gate before I start playing it (I want to also do that game down the road for quite some time, but D&D has been a major roadblock preventing that that I am trying to clear)
I miss Quake and all the 1990's stuff. Any oddball free time usually goes to trying to get through that source material. Almost every RPG game around in the 90s (besides maybe Fallout) has some connection to D&D, many of them being set in the same world.
Hope to soon get back to the Wikia, but with so much going on it has been difficult. I was hoping it would slow down, but instead it got more intense. Eventually I should be able to devote time to the next walkthrough series (I know I keep saying that, ain't easy when I keep thinking about getting to it and something else comes up).
Just wanted you all to know I am not dead, just busy and managed to squeeze some of that short time not put to that source material (can't even read a magazine a day to give you an idea of why I can't use it towards the wikia).
Nice review Vork, really does the game justice. You summed it up perfectly by saying that on the face it looks like a Doom clone but get below the skin and you'll find a game worthy in its own right (almost asking the question why people don’t call Dark Forces and other improved games a Heretic clone?). For me personally it is the enemies that I most enjoyed about Heretic. I remember as I first played it last year that the varying degrees of difficulty, from the Imps (as easy as stepping on a dead ant) to the Maulotaur (I must change my pants before trying to kill this thing again!) was at a level of perfection I can barely place on any other game. Quake, Dark Forces don't even come close. Only maybe Unreal comes close but it fails to reach #1 with its heavy use of reskinned versions of the same enemy.
Welcome back(ish) Death! Glad you’re still alive! :D. I know the feeling too well my friend of not having enough time. At least you’re keeping yourself busy. Interesting hobby you got there, reading D&D stuff but not playing? But hell, we all enjoy what we enjoy and as long as we enjoy it that’s all that matters. I’ve done something’s that would raise an eye brow but I enjoy it. Is your internet problems a permanent thing or can you get around it eventually?
Talking of Quake and Unreal, I am currently playing both Quake II and Unreal at the same time. I've never done this before but I can say playing the two games I think have the greatest FPS experience/game play is a joy. It may answer my question... which one is truly the best?
Death is not dead (awesome pun intended) - this certainly is good news. You know, I've done similar stuff myself - reading D&D-related material without necessarily intending to play it. There are some truly amazing things in those books.
My upcoming vacation will definitely be dedicated to classic gaming - it's been a while since I've done a nice full playthrough of Final Doom, so it's time to blow the dust off the trusty ol' shotgun :)
Well, until the FPS term was coined every game in the genre was known as a Doom clone I have heard. It just was the game that made the style popular. Otherwise we could have Hovertank 3d clone, or even further the Maze War clone.
Unreal did also have a large number of enemies, don't know how it compared to Heretic. I guess you have to eliminate a few if you don't count the Nali Rabbit because it doesn't attack you. Still, it mocks you with its chirping and bleeds all over your shoes when you step on it, making it maybe the worst enemy in my book!
It seems as time goes on I will have even less. Next month other things are starting up that will make time even tighter. I have said the same thing, I am reading D&D and not even enjoying the actual game! I am trying to become an expert without touching a single dice :p. It seems I am doing all the work without any play! Eh, I would rather be doing things like Quake or Unreal, just don't have that type of time and thus have to read. The difference is that you feel less upset to leave something you don't care too much about in comparison to something you absolutely love. If I ever get a ton of time I can start doing some other things. For right now, I am plugging through D&D (for old RPGs!) and then Lovecraft (for Quake!). Almost at the point I want to be with D&D actually, just have to make it to the end of 1979 (where I will take a quick break before going back to it). It's already April (The Dragon 24). Also starting to find a lot less luck for finding stuff from this year. Almost anything by Judges Guild had to be skipped over since the start of this year. Eh, guess I am looking at a lot as it is.
I do a lot that raises a lot of eyebrows. I am kinda the type that loves to have fun when I can and will do what I want to do (within the law of course). Not many people understand my love of Rammstein when I rock out to them. Almost every day before going to work I am listening to "Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?".
As for internet problems, not sure. It is kinda up to where I am living in the coming times. I am not sure if I am staying, returning, or going somewhere else. It would be nice to stay because I just got here, but as you see some things were better quality where I was (I would also have a lot more time now based on how things are set up, I had planned to get more active in the summer but then came here in hopes of certain things). I guess it is up to fate to decide where the cards will lie.
Eh, I have tried playing Quake 1 and Unreal at once. Very confusing, you lose your sense of control in one or the other. Unreal's right click is a secondary fire, while Quake doesn't have it and thus is set to the usual FPS jump. Console commands are the worst!
I never finished Final Doom. Did TNT and enjoyed it (I loved the truck for some reason, was just amazing what they could do with brushes). Plutonia didn't seem too vicious, then again I was a hardened veteran at that time prepared for the worst by hearsay. I stopped at level 29 or so, wherever there was a sewer. I think I have said it before, I cannot stand sprite based sewers for some inexplicable reason.
Back to TD24, as I hope to reach the next decade before September!
I've always wondered why first-person shooters have so many sewers in them. It's a pretty boring environment - just tunnels, tunnels and water/slime.
That's level 28 of Plutonia. The next one, "Odyssey of Noises," is very cool because it is designed like a small city (with streets, sidewalks and other stuff), and many of the buildings can be entered. The level usually takes a lot of time to fully explore and clear out but the experience is amazing.
I love Rammstein... even my parents like their music a lot. Having studied a little German, I can occasionally understand some phrases and sentences.
(skip if you don't want to read my life story) Rammstein used to be my favourite band. I say used to be because for me there's no favourite. When I was a stupid 11-year-old I only listened to Rammstein/Slipknot/Evanescence/Metallica and R+ was the one I listened to the most. But since then my range of music has reached all the corners of the world and I now have over 7,000 songs. How could I possibly still limit my self to choosing a favourite? Sure R+ is still up there but then I could just as easily choose the Cure. Also I never just listen to R+. I wait ages and ages without listening to it and then listen to all the albums from start to finish. It's a great experience! (/skip if you don't want to read my life story)
City levels are great. Barons Hed in Jedi Knight feels alive with people during their daily lives while being tormented by Imperial forces. Defending them from the terrorist Grans and Grave Tuskens made me feel like a hero :D
12 more days until my vacation... and I have started a Quake countdown :)
There is a total of 63 levels in Quake and its mission packs. Three of these levels (e1m7, Armagon and r2m8) are very short and can be dropped from the count, which leaves 60 - a nice round number. More importantly, it divides by 12.
So that makes 5 levels to play every evening until the I finally get my long-overdue break.
And guess what - 5 is one of my favorite numbers. PERFECT :)
Just tried to start Quake... got resolution problems. Wonder if everything has to be fixed up again if I was to officially play. EDIT: Upon retrying it works fine. Must have just been a burp in the system.
I just wanted to see if I could get that first grunt by grenade launch/rocket combination. Sure, it may not be official, but it would be fun to gib something that quick :p. EDIT: New goal. Learn to properly control grenade jump. Just kept hitting the ceiling. It was hilarious backing up to rocket jump only to kill the Grunt on the jump before he could shoot :P.
Last night, E3M3 - I made a Fiend get frozen in mid-air :)
The thing teleports in the air, but I managed to shoot it before it could touch the floor. So instead of falling down, it tried to perform its leap attack and then froze in the air motionless with its "arms" spread out.
After I killed it, the corpse was stuck in the air... but when I walked through it, it fell to the floor (making the "thud" sound).
Funny thing. Have you guys experienced something similar?
I've sometimes had a Fiend freeze motionless in the air if they hit a wall during their jump attack. Although it only lasts a second or two before they land and continue trying to kill me.
What do you guys think of Doom 3? Ever played it?
I found Doom 3 for the PC last week (not mine) and so I installed it and I've gotten into it. It's no where near as good as Unreal but I think it is alot better than Quake 4. Not saying a lot, I know, but it's still fun.
Vorknkx - I have experienced something like that because the incident sounds familiar. I can't remember exactly what or if it was even that game. But a corpse frozen in the air that drops when you walk into it sounds familiar.
Doom 3? I can't bash that game too much, it was the one that got me into FPS. It was the first game I ever level designed for. I did have many problems during its run, but most can be attributed to computer problems (I had a cheap computer in those days from the early 2000s on one of the lowest video cards, this is a bit better suited but I haven't touched Doom 3 since then). I beat the campaign and even started ROE (never completed because it was around the time I left). I left more due interest in level design. The game would lag when I would have eight or so enemies in one room. I saw doom's large amounts and got annoyed at the slowness of the game from then on.

When I played Doom 3 I started it as a hobby with my father actually. Don't know where he heard of it or why that game over others at the time. Back then I played random games but never really paid attention to much (Empire Earth, Thief 2, and Spiderman are kinda three different games but all titles I played). Yes, before Doom 3 I played Thief 2 and Shark! Hunting the Great White. Both were great loves of mine, but I never bothered or even heard of a genre of games. Back in those days I never even touched an RPG (except Toontown as a child and Pirates Online when I got a little older).
Doom 3 was a life changing game for me. I played the multiplayer almost every night back then with my friends, my parents, ect. If I knew you and you had Doom 3, we were playing a deathmatch. It was either the base game or EMZ (I did it so early that I didn't even realize it was a mod until later).
My sound card back then was the worst though of all. You couldn't understand what people were saying, it would skip, it was hell (pun intended). So I went out and got a new audio card. Remember me talking about the Doom 3 curse? It was the time between me getting the new sound card and quitting the campaign because I didn't want to spoil the end with the old one (won't give the level until you get there Raadec, hehehe).
During that age I played KOTOR, Thief: the Dark Project, Doom, Doom 2, Star Wars: Republic Commando, and many other titles that I forget. By this time I was aware what an FPS was and was looking for them. Most of these games I never finished then or even now (Doom and Doom 2 I did, the other two were not so lucky to have a replay). I may have even saw Quake, but thought I stopped Doom 2 (I beat Doom 1) because I hated sprites (I only made it to level 7 or so, never to the city). That sounds unrelated until you realize that when I got Quake I was under the impression it was a sprite based game based to my only visual knowledge being a video on Wikipedia that looked spritish. You can see my surprise, but that was much after Doom 3.
I returned to and beat Doom 3. Somewhere around there I got involved with Level Design and the Sound Editor as I said previously. I played around with basic concepts, never got that serious (would like to, just need to sit down and choose an engine). This game singlehandedly started my interest in video games (before I was adamant about being a paleotologist or something like that due to an interest in dinosaurs). My eventual dream job is now to get in the gaming field and create something representive of the good old days. Since then I have played with various level editors (jumping around mostly) and 3d modelers. The main reason for me reading DnD is to understand the original intention of an RPG (have to branch out in a company, don't know where you will end up when you start). So pretty much Doom 3 is the thing that sparked an interest in where I eventually hope to end up.
I kinda got off subject a bit, but that was another thing caused by my father. He and me were to both do Level Designing. He got the original tutorial I watched (something on Doom3world). I had gone through them quickly and was loving it. I thought my father was maybe doing the same until it turned out he never got past the first room. I offered to help him when he revealed it was boring to him, he would rather just play. But anytime I created a level (mostly multiplayer) we would play it in my old server. He never enjoyed it for too long though because I knew the secrets inside and out. I never learned how to make it downloadable for other people so we were kinda limited on players (I could have posted it online, but felt it would be obscure and something people wouldn't want to track down.
I eventually started playing either Doom or Unreal and that eventually killed my Doom 3 experience. I would go back and not enjoy it as much. My father wasn't really into it like he used to be and eventually stopped alltogether. So I moved to Unreal I believe. I then beat that and moved to its precurser Quake and then Doom.
Eventually at some point I came back to Quake due to my eventual belief I disliked sprites again (happens time and time again). It was that play that sparked interest in Quakewiki. After beating the original game and the expansion packs I started playing mods. I saw something on gamespy that recommended songs to play with Quake. One was Rammstein's Eifersucht, which is what turned me onto Rammstein.
I eventually played a mod named Quoth. I saw the new monsters and how there wasn't a wiki talking about them. Before with Unreal I had edited the wikia (Liandri) to include more details about those creatures I found. So I joined Quakewikia to create articles about these new monsters. But instead I found myself doing level pages because I felt that everything stemmed from levels (maybe my Level Design mentality?) and that led to me starting to do the level pages. By the time I was done I wasn't even really playing Quake besides to complete the walkthroughs (plus I had upgrades in computers multiple times as Raadec saw).
So after Quake I kinda jumped around as you have seen. War of the Worlds, some Lovecraft, more Unreal, and eventually I ended up doing DnD stuff. All to understand the hobby as a complete whole and perhaps a lot better than designers today (which I want because I see what they make). Making it in the industry will be hard, especially making it that high, but it is an eventual goal. Can't do if you don't try, right?

Yeah, I've played D3... and I got the expansion as a birthday gift :)
I liked it as a whole, even though I could never love it like the classic Dooms. I liked the creepy atmosphere and the attention to detail. A lot of players complained about the darkness but I actually enjoyed it.
There were a few moments in the game that actually made me jump in my seat - a pretty rare achievement :)
Death double posted, I think that's a rule breach. He must be stripped of his adminship. He is an arse hole. Just kidding, I love you really ^_^
After playing Silent Hill I have come to despise the shitty attempts at horror that Resident Evil made (D3 is more similar to ResiEvil than Silent Hill) so in that respect, D3 fails to hit the spot. However it is still scary. While 3/4 of it is cheap scare tactics, a 1/4 is actually chill to your bone freaky. Not even Unreal pulled this off and not Quake by far.
The only FPS that matched this scary level and exceeded it was the last part of Mysteries of the Sith. Like you say Vork, it's not as good as Doom I and II and not as good as Quake, but as entertainment, it is up there.
Fun fact, my father bought Quake 2 when it was new. I only played it because he let me. Maybe if I was not allowed I'd never have played Quake and I'd not be an Admin here now.
I have never had a problem with spirits in FPS, Death. The worst FPS I played was Dark Arena on GBA and even that wasn't too bad. I was a little late for the spite era (apart from a few DOS games) so I'm no expert. Doom I and II on the PS3 were very good experiences.
Going back to scary games, I'll mention again the last part of Mysteries of the Sith. It is the only game where I think, holy shit I got to do that, in a good, but horrific and very freighting way. I'd love that experience again... Taking suggestions...

Silent Hill is as good as I thought? I have been meaning to touch it but never did. So it really is horrified? Hopefully more than Fatal Frame (I cannot hold myself together from laughing at the word rope because of that game).
To me I feel that 1/4th was due to triggers, something not done in Quake or Unreal reallly. I don't really like triggers because it cuts away from the action. My favorite level in Doom 3 used to be the most trigger infested.
Nice that your father let you play Quake 2. My mother kinda slipped in violent video games when she thought Thief was a lot less violent (don't kill anyone) to violent on lower diffuclty settings (not that much, but blood stains). After that I pretty much could touch anything violent.
I don't even know if it is sprites or just sewer mazes. Something triggers off a deep depression that makes me quit the game and want to switch to something 3d (usually along the lines of more immersive). I think the problem is more than that though as I have played JDoom, the 3d equivalent. Only thing I liked really was the revolver (which is rather fun for some reason).
I was a little late for any 90s video game. Ironically that is all I play. I kinda went back in time from 2004.
As usual when talking video games I will mention Thief. As a child I had trouble traveling through the catacombs and had to grow up before I would brave it (eventually getting to the point that they became my friends, only to become my enemies when they killed me). I find it weird because I would watch horror movies no problem. I think it had something to do with games though, the immersiveness being a great tool for horror. I remember some map where a crate was thrown at you by a ghost. Oh yeah, there was some ghost in the library that was even worse than the Haunts (the reason I never beat level 13 until I got older). Can't say how my adult mind finds these things, but from a horror child this was a lot more scary. Another contributor is always headphones making it sound close (can't believe I could immerse myself with those cheap things back then, but then this was before Turtle Beaches and 7.1 audio existed).
Thief is like Dishonoured but without the super powers right? I liked the latter so if this is the case I may try Thief. Vork introduced me to HerHex so now it's your turn :)
Although triggers are cheap, at least in Doom 3 triggers normally open up walls to ammo and health supplies, with a monster but the supplies are the reward to winning that fight I guess.
I recently bought some speakers (30w) for my Laptop at my second house and they have something called 360 sound. I can tell you it works very well to make that 1/4 of Doom that is actually scary even more so than if I had just my laptop in-built speakers.
Silent Hill is a masterpiece of the PlayStation line up. Ofcourse when it was new it was heavily compared to ResiEvil 1 and 2 but those Japanese B-Movie wannabes don't come close to matching Silent Hill in sheer chill-through-your-bone scariness. It's worth a play through. ResiEvil uses action packed scare tactics to make you jump but Silent Hill makes the whole town feel alive with evil and you feel surrounded by it all. No need for a monster to jump out from behind a corner or for the screen to be filled with monsters to gun down, even when you're alone you know you're not.
0_0. Never even heard of Dishonoured before. Now I want to try this game, if it is supposed to be a modern Thief! The remake of Thief sounds disappointing (different voice actor makes it so it cannot be the same game, how do you replace a theatre performer that created Garrett for someone with more movement abilities). I wish I could easily point you that way but do know it is a very different style (don't know if Dishonored is a lot like it or not). It ain't a run and gunner, it is more slow paced and stealth. But stealth in a steampunk/medieval world while fighting zombies and other supernatural beasts. There is an interesting amount of politics also going on.
How far have you made it in Doom 3?
These headphones seem quite similar. They are the first to make noises like they are coming from one side or the other, behind you, ect. It would be awesome to replay Thief myself. Your tempting me :p.
That sounds more what I am looking for in a game. I hate jump out at you, not really that much of a scare tactic when everybody does it. Plus you ask yourself why some monster was just hiding in a closet, how long, did they have any spare food...
I have only heard good things of Silent Hill and wanted to play it at one point. The copy I got was broken or something though, lagged to the point that I didn't succeed in following the little girl more than 3-4 steps.
Thief on the Unreal Engine with super powers? Then again, super powers kinda bug me. The remake has some weird abilities I cannot stand the sound of. The first game doesn't even have super powers (for the player) and the second only has a throwable eye (but that is all part of the story apparently).
Apparently the remake of Thief is looking a lot like Dishonored. The game was also a homage to the original, though it sounds like some things are off. It is more violent than Thief, on higher difficulties you don't really kill humans but knock them out. On a lower you can go Rambo on them though :P.
Another very interesting thing of Thief was an alignment for every creature. Certain types would be friendly to each other, but there were many that would attack another on sight. Throw a Zombie and a Hammerite in the same room, they will fight each other until one dies/blows up.

Anyway, I remember playing Doom 3 for the first time in 2005. I finished it shortly before Christmas. The visual quality was lowered and some levels were running a bit slow, but it was still an interesting experience.
A stealth game set in a steam punk world with politics? You can describe Dishonoured the same word for word. Maybe they are similar. I really enjoyed Dishonoured so I think you will and I think I will enjoy Thief. What system(s) is it on and which is the best?
Dish's powers are a mix of good and bad. One allows you to teleport short distances. I gotta tell you, looking down on an enemy from a vantage point and then instantly appearing behind him to either kill or disable him is an experience that does not get old throughout the entire game.
I've just exited the Alpha Labs, killing the Vore wannabe. I don't know if I'll complete it but I'm into it at the moment so I'll enjoy it as long as I can.
I hope you and Shubby got a long ok. She can be a little sulkish around spiked balls.
My laptop has higher than bottom gaming laptop specs that can play Crysis on Ultra High settings. It makes mince meat outta Quake III and Doom 3.
Doom 3 had to be low visual quality on my computer. I don't know how it could run on this, even with improved software I insist on older games. Plus most of my games are right now in storage (besides Unreal and Quake surprisingly).
Well Raadec, Thief was made at the same time Half Life was, being released 15 days later. Gamespot used to say it was game of the year when it came out, but then kinda fell into obscurity. To hear designers make a game after Thief is amazing.
It is only on the PC (I think the 3rd is also on the Xbox and the remake will be on the big three). Still, it is recommended to get Thief: Gold as it is basically the first game with a patched game and new levels.
Ah, the Vore wannabe :P. I remember hours wasted with just Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. Alpha Labs is a decent series of maps. I guess you are now in Enpro. A better level I guess. Hmm, not much to say about any at all really :p.
My laptop would probably overheat, it is older and not really my gaming platform. My desktop is where it is at with the Turtlebeaches.
Just looking up how high Crysis is to compare. Seems my Core 2 Duo could endure (processor). RAM is more than double the amount, scary too as I thought 4 was low and I needed to get 8. My computer can hold 12GB, but wow games take up that much room nowadays? I have a Geforce 640 so no problems there. Hmm, nothing special in Crysis it seems. Crysis 3 on the other hand, a four core, a Geforce 680, 8 GB ram for Ultra High... Seems I would have to resort to lower settings (everything is over a 6 or 7). The Core 2 Duo is a little low (E8400) but still good enough to hit medium settings. I guess it could handle Doom 3?

I used it for almost every glitch involving monsters in my walkthrough as I never had a good level editor to check myself. That is one thing that would make Quake a lot more like Unreal, which I am easily able to describe by pulling up the editor on any questions.
Getting through the DMG of DND, maybe it is due to how long I have been doing it but this feels very long in comparison to the Player's Handbook. Yet I still prefer either to City State of the Invincible Overlord. Have to get to 1980!

I have a GeForce GT 730M. My laptop has a 128GB SSD where the core files (system 32) and the OS are stored. It then has a seperate 1TB HDD for other files, documents, games etc... It means that booting up and processing are as fast as hell. People complain about Windows 8 but my laptop is many times faster than my Win7 desktop. Besides everything bad about Win8 is no longer a problem as I've customised the shit outta of it to make it look and feel like Win7, but with the mega fast speed of Win8!
I think I'd like to play Crysis 3. It'd be good to put my laptop through its paces.

I could get better, but I am happy with my computer. If it can handle Crysis this well, it should handle Doom 3. No need to go overboard with modern games, don't even touch them so why put so much. On my 465 GB I have 326 GB free. This is with four seperate Unreal installations, Quake, 3ds Max + Maya, four emulated computers, and a ton of junk.

I am one of those who complains about Windows 8 and thought most people didn't :p. From what I have seen and heard it doesn't look or sound pretty. Is it true that right clicking means you have to to go to the bottom of the screen on a non-touchscreen as well? I have heard about start up speeds are improved, but nothing else. Plus I hate when I try customizing to another OS, because I end up lagging it to the point of no use (that was how the old computer that couldn't run Doom 3 died, by using non-customization packs to make XP like 7). Then I just got 7 instead of fighting with it. 8 would be interesting to jump to, but I kinda have a stable setup and would have to transfer data or put it in another virtual drive (insert cd and create imaginary computer, great for dealing with old school games that refuse to work like Tomb Raider). What would I even do with the extra speed? Use it to place a dancing cat gif on my desktop in a continous loop? My internet is still slow. I don't play modern games. I think I could even do the dancing cat thing now. Does Windows 8 have an animated desktop yet instead of a screensaver? Note to self, create screensaver of tiled dancing kittens so short that it looks like they are dancing if I ever get the extra capabilities to do so.

EDIT: Hmm. It seems I cannot find a small gif of the dancing cat and animations cannot be resized. To somehow explain my point I have instead elected for a group of meerkats (my spellcheck says that word is wrong, recommending beermat) playing instruments. Well have fun with the musical beermats!

It seems DoE has the lowest number of level bugs - I think I was able to get 100% kills on all 15 levels (on Hard, at least). I will be starting it tonight, after Armagon gets blown into oblivion :)
I'd probably get a new computer when I move to my new place. "Old Faithful", my Acer laptop, still works pretty well (and is perfectly compatible with old classics), but he is more than 8 years old and it's starting to show. The keyboard has suffered the most (not surprisingly).
I truly recommend the Acer Aspire V3- 771G. That's what I have now. There seems to be two versions according to PC world so make sure you get the newer one. I don't play many modern games but I am looking at Crysis 3 so that's something.
My Win8 works and looks just like Win7. Make sure you buy Start8, a Start menu for Win8 as it's Start menu has been replaced by the Start screen (an unholy pile of shit).

I found out that Toontown and Pirates Online will be closing, any Disney mmorpg that isn't Club Penguin. No, I haven't played either since I was a child. But it got me thinking a lot.
A major difference between the FPS and MMORPG genre is longetivity. Due to multiplayer games demanding servers supplied by the industry, when the industry decides to move on from a game the MMORPG is dead. Not only will you be hard pressed to find an exe to download the free version, but even if you did it would be fruitless as no servers would exist.
Unreal is a game from 1998. Pirates Online is from 2007 (could have sworn it was older than that). The game from 2007 is closing while the game from 1998 continues to have servers (starting it up, still full of servers!).
But Unreal and other FPS games have servers that can be created by any player. If I wanted to create a server I could. Teams get together to support more stable and dedicated server, but I could do the same thing with less popularity as I am not well known like the teams. No matter how few servers exist, someone could pull up a server at any time. You are not suddenly banned from playing the game.
Imagine if Quake, Thief, Unreal, ect were all MMORPGs. Unreal has kinda been replaced by newer versions and now Epic focuses on Gears of War. Thief was originally made by a company that went under (due to John Romero's Dakatana it seems, it hurt the publisher Eidos and it seems LGS took the damage and had to move as many as they could to Ion Storm which was also the name of the company, but a different branch, that John Romero created the bomb in). Quake... well, judging by it coming after Doom 4, and Doom 4 being restarted doesn't look like a bright future plus is kinda covered by Quakeworld or Quake 3...
No, the games aren't replacable. But as the company went on to other things and eventually didn't want to upkeep an old game they took it down. You are no longer allowed to personally fight another Shambler as of September. Watch a Youtube video if you want to see the fun people had. We have moved on to RAGE and the upcoming Doom 4. When we added the feature of regerating health and got rid of the unrealistic rocket launcher it seems we lost the funds to keep supporting the game. Nobody was buying the downloadable content such as a Gremlin or a Mummy. So this last month we will offer that content for free plus the game you knew. Hope you had fun, please buy our next game. I know the start menu is terrible in Windows 8. It seemed 8.1 added a lot of features. Problem is they were all stuff from Windows 7. Promotions for the Xbox One were loaded on a Windows 7. So many game companies refuse to use it.
Maybe one day I will do Windows 8. But for now, why upgrade what I will not use? I actually am usually the opposite, but when it costs per upgrade you start to question if it is worth it.
Also, glad you both love the meerkat beermats. In other related news, meerkat is now a recognized word in my spell chat. Weird, aparently it learned overnight. And who said our robots weren't smart enough to learn from their mistakes and prepare to fight the human oppressors.

Yep, you can be a player, a Death Knight, or a Zombie. All start in their individual areas. Even though they are normally enemies, here they are friends! Eventually all three will meet up in one city to combat the ultimate horror, the Strogg.

I wonder how would gender even work. Is there anything even remotely female besides Shub? If there is prepare for some nude hack that is the only reason this game will be still known in a few years. Course, iD could interestingly by replacing all hacks with a nude version of an ogre. That image will scar you for life! Shouldn't have hacked our game, now should you digital pixel pervert? It seems every game I look up mods for has one of these if a female was in it. I guess that is another good thing about old school, the community has none of that to deal with in servers (then again, Custer's Revenge).
I guess by your post crafting is big? Why not just purchase the armor at a cash shop! While you are at it, get the victory screen and beat the game! Congrats, you paid us money so you win. You can win even more by going back and buying all other cash shop items. Go forth and conquer!
Yeah, in some games (e.g. WoW), some of the best stuff is obtained by crafting it, though it usually requires some super rare or expensive ingredients. In the case of Quake, we can have things like Eye of Armagon, Strogg brain, Gremlin Tooth, etc.
Of course, you'll have to butcher a lot of gremlins before you find that tooth :)
The Rift would be a massive tower with Armagon's sanctum at the top. Each floor (10 floors) contains loads of goodies and monsters to fight but barriers stop you from getting to higher floors until you get to a certain level. You need level 125 to reach Armagon to kill him and take his eye!
It'd have been very intresting to see what Quake would have been like in its original RPG form. It'd be cool for an RPG game to made (not like Hexen) with magic spells based on the monsters in the game (Shambler's lightning or Death Knight's five fire bolt arc).
I went on Quake3Arena online this year and there was a seemingly endless list of active servers, full of peeps. It will take a very long time for Q3 and UT99 to die. I can however imagine that the current Call of Duty and Killzone servers will be dead within a few years.

Raadec, I was talking about the death of a RPG that prohibits server use. Isn't Quake3Arena, Q3, and UT99 all dedicated servers run by individuals? They can never have a death, just like Quake won't. Even games from the 1970's are still playable (not with people, but you can still create an empty LAN server). The problem with an MMORPG is that it is totally multiplayer and also only has servers designed by the creator, thus meaning when the game dies the servers die and nobody can touch the game anymore.
Also, another thought that Vork made me think of. You can't butcher gremlins and have it enjoyable, people would complain about grinding. See, in an FPS killing hundreds of things is fun. In an MMORPG it is a harassment called grinding. I wonder if a big reason is the lack of interactivity (Aim and shoot versus click and watch).
Well, this will be the genius of the Quake MMORPG - you won't grind like you do in other RPG's, you will still shoot and fight enemies in real time, like in an FPS game! You can even get some kind of bonus for dispatching enemies in a certain way (e.g. hacking them with an axe increase the chance for a cool item to drop, etc.).
Secret levels should be a nice source of special ingredients and other stuff. For example, "liquid void" can only be found in The Edge of Oblivion - but it drops very rarely, and only on Hard or Nightmare difficulty :)
And, as Death mentioned, players should be able to create and maintain their own servers, to prevent the game from dying when the developer decides to ditch it.
I realised something from playing Doom 3. Quake 4 sucks ass big time. Whoever made Quake 4 clearly thought they could get away with putting some Strogg related guff into the idTech4 engine and call it Quake.
Truth is Quake 4 is a very watered down version of Doom 3. All of the cons and none of the pros. I was a little erring here and uhhhring there about Doom 3 but I'm now in the Delta Labs and the gameplay revoling around the balance between the torch and your gun is mega fun. I like it so much that I've bought Resurrection of Evil so that I can play it as soon as I complete Doom 3.
Can far are you through DoE Vork? I haven't started it yet even after completing Armagon a month ago. I will wait until I feel like playing it through. Don't let the Dragon scare you... I hear it's a piece of cake with +mlook :D
Finished DoE last night. That Dragon isn't very scary when you know how to dodge - he doesn't shoot very frequently ;)
You know, I think I finally found some stuff in DoE that could be added to the Easter Egg page. There are several textures that look like bookcases and one of them features a book with a face on its cover. This looks pretty similar to the Necronomicon as it in appears the Evil Dead series... it is also featured frequently in H. P. Lovecraft's stories, and is related to (guess who) Shub-Niggurath. So, I'm pretty sure it's an egg :)
Mmmmm, Resurrection of Evil is good - I really enjoyed it. There are more intense battles and creepier demonic manifestations. Besides, the bosses are pretty cool too. And the protagonist has better facial expressions (he even seems to enjoy fighting the demons at times).
Interesting... I found a really obscure and random website that apparently allows you to download a quake installation, but one that is apparently warped beyond comparison because it connects to some odd server through quakeworld.
It is called CTRL-SPACE and seems to have been made around 1999 with WinQuake. As you see, it creates a odd output instead of normally starting the game. Navigating is difficult, I only managed to get to the options once by accident. It seems letters you type are not what comes on the screen.
Just thought I would share this odd and obscure piece of Quake history that probably is the most unplayable mod with a functional startup.
It will be interesting to have a resource that looks into such stuff, perhaps categorizing it as we get more and more information. I know I have kinda made plans before that didn't work out due to living conditions (back to the old setup and have some better hardware).
In a little bit I plan on returning to Quake and working where I left off (finally after a break for an entire year). I kinda gave up on my previous projects that kinda kept me busy as they were getting really dull and I want to enjoy the feel of the FPS genre again (plus now I have the oppurtunity to do so). This time around I want to do it from the beginning of the era I enjoy, which as I have always said is the start of 3d models such as in Quake. Therefore, that is my starting point as I try to work through late 90s FPS games and replay some titles I miss and have had sitting in a storage bin for years.
I say a little bit still though, as I do want to go through Lovecraft's stories to see where Quake got its main influence. I understand RPGs, I understand Doom, but I am kinda limited on how much Lovecraft I have read (yet to read any true mythos stories actually). It is public domain for a large amount of his life, meaning it shouldn't be too difficult to track down (especially when numerous websites exist just to give exactly what I am describing).
So I will work on getting Lovecraft done in the hope to get to Quake in a very short amount of time and actually DO something to this wikia. I have been sitting on the sidelines for too long.
I have also noticed an edit on the Introduction walkthrough (which I have not paid much attention to lately).
The introduction was apparently edited in August to have the videos in a gallery instead of dispersed beside the differences. While slightly better for organization, I wonder if the bigger video screen was more user friendly while also filling more screen room instead of requiring the player to scroll (this was part of the original intention and why I did it as such). Which do you guys feel work better for the walkthroughs? If the style of the Introduction walkthrough, I will quickly alter the others to follow suit. If the old format is better, we can keep it and simply undo that edit. I just believe we need standards and should not have an altered format between walkthroughs.
True, it is neater. I should have tested the video, forgot it played in a pop-up window and not simply at the small resolution on the page. I guess my only real gripe is the size of the walkthroughs (intro can make it pretty neat, but longer levels might not be desirable in such a large format). Maybe even that is better in length due to user friendliness, it is better to have something that won't be squished on smaller resolution screens (which some viewers might have and therefore should be taken into consideration).
As Vork has been absent since October I will just assume his answer would be similar (though we will glady take his opinion when he returns into consideration). One thing I can say is that the code looks better when doing it in this method.
Also, have you guys ever had luck changing the native resolution of Quake? It seems to cause some jerkiness when I alter the colors to 32 bit and altering the resolution seems to be out of the question. I have heard that this was a very early example of resolution changes, so perhaps it was a buggy format (I have Unreal fully working at my native resolution). I tried FitzQuake (a third party port) and it seemed to work slightly better (though my native resolution leaves the text boxes miniscule due to it being a 16:9 format) and still has lag when changing the colors to 32 bit.
Btw, maybe we should start another message thread. I think we have almost hit 170 here...
Hey Vork, I spoke too soon! Today is one of the first days in a while that I have actually used time effectively instead of wasting it.
It seems tider and easier with the code. The length isn't much more that what was there before (a lot had odd spacing that could make it just as long, one day I need to dig through the code and try to make it more streamlined, plagued a large deal of E4M7).
What exact exceptions are you talking about? The only one I could think of was the organization of the videos on shorter levels, but that exception is pretty much nil with the new format.
If anything I think we need to find a way to more effectively state the template formats of various types of articles so those who take the time won't have their edits unecessarily removed due to a misunderstanding. It seems Stoudemire added videos, the only problem was they were walkthroughs made in unofficial ports (the episode pages was Darkplaces, the expansions seems more like QuakeWorld). For right now the expansion edits doesn't seem like a bad idea as it is a nice placeholder, but is definately not to be the permanent video. On the other hand the episodes had to be removed, as we have walkthroughs for each level that follow the format. Also, Vork, I never noticed your episode pictures until today (maybe I did but forgot) but they are impressive as usual and was a great idea whenever it was done.
So I guess the main exception I can think of is levels that are placeholders before one of us, or another user wishing to take the challenge, tries to write the walkthrough.
Also, in other news, I have the resolution problem fixed up (turns out I just had to not be lazy and put down both the width and height, color changed as well to 32 when I did that). However, it seems to only be officially possible in GlQuake sadly and therefore it seems you WinQuake fans can't alter it (even though it doesn't seem to be missed, I played it like that for years without noticing).
Another question about the future, how about a redux of the walkthrough video series? The last time I did it the biggest flaw was that it was missing the audio cd, which is now no longer an issue. It might be crazy to record all the videos again, but remember I was planning on replaying the game anyway and as the walkthroughs are written it can be a lot quicker and easier to redo a video series. If you guys think it will be of any benefit of all I will start that series upon my return to Quake, which shouldn't be too long (making good ground on Lovecraft, though I do have some novels coming up). The upcoming time is also a good excuse to improve my sound card. I mention this because, even though not the reason I upgraded, it might improve the sound quality of the video as well. We have something in the meantime which is decent, but if we can do something better I ask why not attempt to do what the original lacked?
I have tried looking once more into the News template glitch without any luck, even changing the format and rewriting the code did nothing. It has something to do with the box style, setting it to plain seems to fix whatever glitch exists.
We will see how it turns out, I guess the best ones for the job! My computer works much better with Quake now that it is set up properly with OpenGl, so that's a plus. I try WinQuake on my computer with limited success, maybe because I am too lazy to set it up. So this time around I will be playing with the best official effects possible while exclusively using 1rst party software (Darkforces being the latest bane of the wikia due to how much it changes, it is okay when seperate but not good for original pages). Audio sounds good on this end so I will definately be able to crank while playing :p.
Now that I have music in Quake I feel almost sad that I missed out on it for so many years. The intro video is ten times as awesome!
Upon replaying the original walkthrough videos, I recall how bad the picture really was. The only thing interesting is that it seems my gamma settings are rather bright in the video when they are dark when I play. I guess it is kinda personal preference and it doesn't seem to deter from the video. It runs smooth and sounds great (sounds the same really, but that is a positive when a lot has been changed).
Wikia seems to have evolved as well. Seems it supports more sites than just Youtube (which I think cuts down the original video quality quite a bit). Dailymotion though seems like the only viable alternative (the only in English that isn't a premium service and allows for over 15 minutes of video and has a large filesize limit). Playlists also seem cleaner and quick to setup. Unlike youtube, I didn't have to convert to some other format before uploading. I can also be more active as it is connected to my primary email instead of a gmail account I was forced into (at some point Youtube required it, don't know if they still do). Upload times seem slower (16 seconds takes a little bit to load), but then again I have the time to let an upload run while before I didn't have stability (A laptop is never something I love to let sit for any length of time and only the last few videos showed my old desktop computer which I was using prior to the last month). Plus it might be slower as it is a higher quality compared to the compressed format I used to have to convert it to.
Dailymotion also intrigues me due to a group feature which can perhaps be used to create an entire group for official QuakeWikia content (pretty much anything we have now as long as it is more regulated) instead of all these seperated videos. With the last set it felt too much like a disconnected thing to just create videos on youtube because that suggests that nobody can view any other sets of videos besides those I create. I might still need to be the admin there, but it might be an interesting feature to expand.

(hover over the video and select the button that says either 420p or auto depending on what it is preset to if your bandwidth can support it). I am starting to wonder if the website is dead and thus the links should be removed (the image based website seems to not appear attractive even remotely on the Internet Archive where pictures are not shown). I will wait for your input before deleting these links.
Also, I wanted to bring up Badges and their future. If I have brought this up before (I forget if I have or not, it is not very user friendly to look through the various chat pages we have used) I won't harass you about it again, but it has recently been brought up by Stoudemire18 as a way of promoting useless edits. I agree, believing it almost makes it too easy for edits to become a game where people try to get the highest score instead of being contructive. People should be editing regardless of awards and do we want to promote people that just want to edit to win points? Sometimes I look at edits for certain sections, such as strategy, and wonder if people add something there just to add another day to their daily count. The edits might still be fine, but it feels almost unecessary like they were just trying to do something to get another day. Without such a feature as badges, we might be able to tell if people truly are editing for points or are honestly trying to improve the pages. A wikia is not a place to be competitive, yet I worry some people might make it out to be.
