Modifications or mods are third-party alterations to a a game. Total Conversions are modifications that alter the game completely, often resulting in a completely new game, some of which have become stand-alone. There can be also Partial Conversions that changes the game significantly but not completely to be considered as an Total Conversion. New custom levels and campaigns also exist using only core game content. Many mods also focus on altering the gameplay of existing or custom levels, enemies and levels, or even turn it into an entirely different genre.

Standalone games such as Hexen II, Herectic II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Dark Salvation can be also considered as Total Conversions, but arguably more standalone Quake based games such as Steel Storm, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin and Doombringer. The multiplayer Holomatch component of Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force plays so similarly to Quake III, of which it is based, that it is effectively a Star Trek total conversion.

Below is a list of mods for each game in the series.
