Pumping Station 2 is the second facility that needs to be activated in order to flood the Strogg Reactor with toxic waste. The area consists of a smaller upper level and a larger lower level, which is darker and drenched with toxic slime.

There are several slime canals, as well as a large dangerous sludge pool with rotating fan blades at the bottom.

Secrets

  • Pc icon #1) Go up the ramp from the starting area and around the path until you come to the keycard-locked door to your left, a hallway to your right, and a large wall in front of you with the Strogg logo on it. Shoot this wall to open it, revealing a suit of Body Armor. In the original game, this secret is bugged and will not count as achieved after being found, but this is fixed in the 2023 remaster.
  • Pc icon #2) After activating the pumping systems, return to the area mentioned in Secret #1. You can drop down just in front of the secret area to a lower level containing a BFG10K and a channel of slime. At the end of the slime channel is a ledge with an Adrenaline pickup; this is the secret. Incidentally, several Technicians will appear from that direction when you collect the BFG10K.
  • Pc icon #3) Further along in this lower section of the map, you will find a long ramp leading upward, patrolled by a number of Guards. Look at the slanted wall to the left; one section is recessed. Shoot your way in to find an Invulnerability. Note: this section of the level can also be accessed by detonating the explosive barrels in the room containing the pump controls, which will blast a hole in the floor between the room and this area.
  • Pc icon #4) Past the Blue Key Door, there is a room with a circular a pool of slime. An Enviro-Suit can be found in a room to the right. Activate the Enviro-Suit and jump into the slime to retrieve a Quad Damage in a small alcove. Beware, however, as there is a giant fan down here that will suck you into it and kill you instantly if you are not paying attention; tapping your "jump" button/key will help you resist the fan enough so that it won't pull you into it.

PSX version:

  • PS1 icon #1) Go up the ramp from the starting area and around the path until you come to the keycard-locked door to your left, a hallway to your right, and a large wall in front of you with the Strogg logo on it. Shoot this wall to open it, revealing a suit of Body Armor.
  • PS1 icon #2) After activating the pumping systems, return to the area mentioned in Secret #1. You can drop down just in front of the secret area to a lower level containing a number of Flyers and a channel of slime. Don't drop down to the floor just yet; stay on the ledge. At the end of the slime channel is an Adrenaline pickup and an Enviro-Suit; this is the secret. You can make your way along the ledge to avoid the slime to reach the secret, then drop down and use the Enviro-Suit to wade through the slime on your way back.
  • PS1 icon #3) Further along in this lower section of the map, you will find a long ramp leading upward. Look at the slanted wall to the left; one section is recessed. Shoot your way in to find an Invulnerability. Note: this section of the level can also be accessed by detonating the explosive barrels in the room containing the pump controls, which will blast a hole in the floor between the room and this area.
  • PS1 icon #4) When you reach the circular slime pool, head to the right to find a room with several pipes and an Enviro-Suit. When you collect the Enviro-Suit, up to two Flyers (depending on the difficulty level) will emerge from an alcove that blasts open. Rocket jump your way into the alcove to find some rockets and a medikit.

Differences in the PSX version

  • Different enemy count and secrets (see above).
  • The Quad Damage is still present in the circular slime pool, but it is not counted as a secret in the PSX version.
  • The next level is Waste Disposal Area, whereas in the PC version the player returns to Toxic Waste Dump after this level. Waste Disposal Area is based upon the later sections of Toxic Waste Dump, but is not directly connected to it.

Bugs

  • It is apparently impossible to achieve 100% secrets on this level in the original PC release, due to Secret #1 being bugged. This problem has been corrected in the 2023 remaster, and was also not an issue in the PSX version. Certain other levels in Quake II, The Reckoning and Ground Zero suffered from missing kills, but this level was the only one with a broken secret.
