Quake Wiki

This page shows the screenshots of Quake before the release of final version. The screens collected from various places over internet, most come from official id Software archives.

Some of the screenshots have counterparts from final version to show how the game progressed from early development stage to final version.

Quakepix.zip (3rd August 1995)

Quakepix.zip is an archive of earliest released screenshots of Quake. For more information see Quakepix.zip.

Screenshots for Steve Poole from PC GAMER magazine (August 1995)

An encrypted archive with screenshots named steve.zip was uploaded to id Software FTP, probably in August 1995 (along with Quakepix.zip). People figured out password as poole, and it might be heavily suggested that archive was intented for Steve Poole, the journalist from PC Gamer magazine.[1]

During this period, game used font for HUD from previous id Software's game - Doom (1993).

The archive contains screenshots of several unreleased maps of Quake I.

  • Note. 'QUAKE06.JPG' and 'QUAKE09.JPG' are missing in this archive. Either they were included into archive, or those were original names of higher-resolution screens of "SQBIG1.JPG" and "SQBIG2.JPG".

QuakeED screenshot (10th August 1995)

This screenshot provided by John Romero dates back to 1995. There has been at least on QuakeEd revision. The screenshot features the Texture Palette inspector (64x64 textures, four rows in a separate window), some BSP options (FastBSP, 1/2 BSP, Full BSP), a look down view, some Brush options. Note that the "sizing" buttons have been removed in the current version, and that BSP and other options have been moved to menus. [2]

Originally, it was uploaded on id Software FTP's server on 10th August, 1995.

qpix.zip (28th September 1995)

The file was uploaded somewhere to id Software's site, but no saved links exist.

The archive contains 4 screenshots with early models of Knight and Ogre. A few small changes from August build can be noticed:

  • Texture for Knight has been modified, now its more covered in blood. No untextured parts remain on the model.
  • The HUD has been changed. Health info is on left bottom side (instead of centered, like in August build) and on right is presumbly armor info or ammo info.

Original description

Quake screen shots Released Sep 28th 1995

Here are some shots of the knight and ogre. I said something about looking at the knight in the help finger file... and then realized that there were no shots of him on the ftp site. So here they are.

Various screenshots between Qtest release and Quake Beta 3

There are a few more screenshots uploaded on Valve Archive some of them saved from unknown web-sites or scanned from magazines, which are showing the Quake during period between Qtest and Beta3.

It shows early weapon models like seen in Qtest but in single-player mode.
