The Refinery is the most important sector of the Strogg industrial center. It contains the facilities that produce the fuel for the Strogg counter-fleet, and therefore it is a vital target in the effort to stop that fleet from launching an attack against Earth.

The best way to permanently disable this facility is an airstrike, yet the crucial Airstrike Marker has been stolen by a group of Gekk. Therefore, Joker will have to make a detour and pursue the Gekk to their lair in the Badlands.

This level is the only one in any Quake II campaign in which the Beta Class Iron Maiden appears.

Players should watch their step, as this area contains numerous pools of toxic slime. However, two of them lead to hidden items.

Secrets

  • #1) In the very first room, there is a ledge with an explosive crate on it. There is a push switch behind the crate—destroy it and make your way over to it by leaping on the floating crates. This switch opens a small tunnel leading to an Environment Suit, which you can then use to explore the slime in the same room a find a Dual Fire Damage power-up.
  • #2) In one of the large, open rooms, there is a ladder leading down to a basement passage that takes you to the airstrike zone. Dive into the acid next to this ladder, and surface directly underneath the bridge (before doing so, you can collect another Environment Suit from behind one of the large towers in the airstrike zone). This takes you to a path that leads to some Body Armor and a Trap.
  • #3) SECOND VISIT: After the successful airstrike and soon after fighting a Tank, you will find a set of three parallel pipes that serve as flooring. The middle one is cracked—shoot it, and reveal a passage leading to some Adrenaline.
