The Sniper Rifle is a powerful Weapon that is held by the Sniper class in TeamFortress.

Strategy

The Sniper Rifle is extremely powerful, causing 200 damage in a single shot. It can kill any player in TeamFortress in a single shot as long as they don't have Armor. The Sniper Rifle is therefore a high accuracy, high reward gun that benefits greatly when fired against a sole opponent. Note that this Weapon works by zooming into the target, whereby the player can determine what they wish to hit by watching a visible crosshair that only appears when sniping. The longer the player zooms, the more damage it causes, meaning it is quite beneficial to zoom fully into a target.

The trade-off to this gun that it has a long wait between shots, it takes two and a half seconds after firing before the Sniper Rifle can fire again, more than enough time for someone to retaliate if missed. As the player cannot switch to another Weapon when this is reloading, that leads to the need for quick action and escape, it is often best picking off opponents from a camping location.

In a pinch, the Sniper can also resort to the rapid fire alternate mode by setting the Sniper Rifle to fully automatic. As it only causes 8 damage per shot and the Sniper can only hold 75 Shells, this means that the player will need to spam a lot of Shells in quick succession in order to wipe out an opponent. While an emergency resource, it is pitiful in comparison to the Nailgun, meaning the player should only be using this mode in the strictest of emergencies. This is also a slightly beneficial tool against the extremely rapid Scout, since unlike the Nailgun the Weapon is hitscan.
