Note: this article describes a level that exists in both the Nintendo 64 and Playstation versions. The N64 icon and PS1 icon symbols are used to denote information specific to the Nintendo 64 or Playstation versions respectively. See also the Differences in the PSX version section below.

The Strogg Outpost is the first level of both the Nintendo 64 and Playstation versions of Quake II. The level is short and allows the player to familiarise themselves with the controls, and involves only mild Strogg resistance from a small number of Guards.

The level was first released in the Nintendo 64 version, but the Playstation version is very similar. However, the two campaigns diverge after this level. The Nintendo 64 player will proceed to the Central Complex, while the PSX player heads to the Outer Base.

With the release of the 2023 remaster, the Nintendo 64 campaign is available to play on the PC engine, which allows this level to be played on Nightmare difficulty.

Quick Level Completion

  • From the start, go straight ahead into the collapsed tunnel.
  • Leave the structure and cross the bridge over the pool.
  • Take the elevator to the right in the storage area.
  • Follow the upper level around to the left in the next room.
  • Cross the corridor into the next room.
  • Take the ramp to the right in the final room.

Secrets

N64 version:

  • N64 icon #1) In the open area with the pool at the start of the level, drop down into the water and swim beneath the covered section of the catwalk for three Armor Shards and two boxes of Shells.
  • N64 icon #2) At the far end of the same section, the cargo lift to the right of the Stimpacks can be ridden. From there, jump onto and ride the crates across to the ledge above the door for the Invisibility.
  • N64 icon #3) On the lower level of the next room, the large crate behind the ladder contains a secret. Shoot the explosive barrels to reveal a Super Shotgun.
  • N64 icon #4) There is a button above the door in the corridor beyond the storage rooms. Shooting it reveals a secret room on the left containing an Adrenaline.

PSX version:

  • PS1 icon #1) In the open area with the pool at the start of the level, drop down into the water and swim beneath the covered section of the catwalk for two Armor Shards and two boxes of Shells.
  • PS1 icon #2) Destroy the explosive crates in the next room to reveal Jacket Armor.
  • PS1 icon #3) On the lower level of the next room, the large crate behind the ladder contains a secret. Shoot the cracked surface to reveal shotgun shells.
  • PS1 icon #4) There is a button above the door in the corridor beyond the storage rooms. Shooting it reveals a secret room on the right containing an Adrenaline.

Differences in the PSX version

  • Different enemy count and secrets (see above).
  • The player's drop pod is present at the start, which was not the case in the Nintendo 64 version.
  • The Invisibility power-up is exclusive to the Nintendo 64 campaign, and the Super Shotgun won't be found by the PSX player until the next level.
  • Fewer health pickups are available; besides the Adrenaline the level contains only two medikits, whereas the N64 version contains four medikits and a number of stimpacks.
