Temple of the Creator is the final map of the new Call of the Machine campaign introduced in the 2023 Quake II Remaster. After opening the portal aboard the vessel using the data harvested from the 6 Data Discs that were found throughout the Units by the 6 other Marines, it is here that The Machine must travel to in order to find and defeat the Strogg-Maker and put an end to their horrible reign.

Quick Level Completion[]

  • Move forward, jump across the platforms to press the button opening the grate, collecting weapons along the way.
  • Pass through and drop into the arena.
  • Kill the two Servitors of Creation. Once they are defeated, the slime around the arena will be drained, allowing access to the lower level.
  • Descend to the lower level and kill the two Masters of the Machine.

Walkthrough[]

This is the final level of Call of the Machine. It consists of four boss enemies, plus a number of minions based on the chosen difficulty level. Move forward through the chambers, collecting the weapons you find, until you reach a series of platforms in a room with slime on its floor. You must jump across the platforms to reach a button which opens a grate allowing you to proceed, but be careful - the platforms lower each time you step on them, so keep moving and jumping. They'll raise back up as soon as you move off them.

More weapons and ammo await you through the grate, and the passage leads to an arena where the boss fight will take place. To begin, only one enemy is present - the first Servitor of Creation, which is based upon the Hornet (see the passage below for a more detailed description). The platforms in this arena will lower into the slime as well, so keep moving and jumping when you need to traverse them. Drop down and collect some more ammo. You may wish to consult the Secrets paragraph at this point, or perhaps you'd rather look for the two secret items in the arena yourself. Anyway, the Hornet is waiting in the far corner of the arena. Once you're ready, start fighting the first Servitor... but beware, after the Hornet Servitor has taken some damage, the central pillar will open to reveal the second Servitor of Creation, which is based upon the Super Tank, and you'll need to contend with both of them at once.

What's more, depending on the chosen difficulty level, a number of minions will emerge from doorways on all four edges of the arena. One door will open after a certain amount of damage has been inflicted upon the Servitors, then another door after a further amount of damage, and so on. On Easy difficulty there are no minions at all, but on Medium and upwards there are a fair few Light Guards, and on Hard/Nightmare a pair of Beta Class Gladiators too - thankfully, lacking their usual power shield.

The doors open in a specific order, so if you remember this order then you can be ready to contend with them. Looking at the arena from the walkway you entered from, the first door to open will be the door to your left, then the one clockwise from that, then the one clockwise from that, and so on.

Once both Servitors are destroyed, the slime filling the arena will drain away, making the lower level of the arena accessible. Dispose of any remaining minions, collect any ammo/health still in the arena, and then stand on one of the platforms to allow it to sink to the lower level.

The central pillar in the lower level will open shortly after you drop onto the lower floor. There is a Body Armor on the lower floor you may wish to collect immediately. When the pillar opens, the Strogg-Makers will be revealed... see the Masters of the Machine section below for details. There's a Megahealth inside the chamber in which they start. It, as well as many (but not all) items can be collected first without alerting the Masters to make the fight easier.

As with the fight on the upper level, these Masters are backed up by minions depending on the chosen difficulty level. On Easy there aren't any, but on Medium and upward it consists of four groups of three Mutants, each group of three released as the Masters have taken a certain amount of damage. Take care not to be surrounded by these Mutants while you fight the bosses. The game will end as soon as you've defeated the two Masters.

As on the first level, the four doors open to release Mutants in a specific order. The first door to open is the one next to the Body Armor, then the one opposite the Body Armor, then the one to the left of the Body Armor, then the one to the right of the Body Armor.

Alternative strategy - rocket jumping[]

There is a way of making both of the battles much easier, involving the use of rocket jumping. Once you've dropped into the arena and you have the attention of the first Servitor, head back to the passageway you dropped down from, and rocket jump back up into it. From the passageway it is a simple matter to kill both Servitors while easily avoiding return fire - you can even use the Blaster to save ammo if you are so inclined.

A similar tactic can be done on the lower level. Once the slime has drained, stand on one of the lowering platforms until it has descended as far as it will go. Drop down to the base floor, collect the ammo and powerups you want without alerting the Masters and then rocket jump back to the top level (both the platforms and walkways can be reached by precise jumps even from the very bottom). From the top, a well-placed rocket can make the first Master go alert without having to engage the second one simultaneously. It's a very easy task to kill them from the upper level - especially using the biggest crack in the bottom of one of the walkways, which is big enough to allow a rocket to pass through.

Servitors of Creation[]

The two Servitors of Creation are based upon the Super Tank and the Hornet.

The Super Tank Servitor is essentially the same as a normal Super Tank but with 1875 health instead of 1500.

The Hornet Servitor has 2500 health instead of 2000, and has different weapon systems to a normal Hornet. Instead of twin chain guns dealing 6 damage per bullet, it fires twin hyperblasters dealing 2 damage per bolt, and the bolts are easier to dodge by strafing than the default chain gun. Its rockets are less powerful than normal, dealing 35 damage instead of 50, and it fires its rockets in sequence rather than firing a salvo of four all at once.

Masters of the Machine[]

The Masters of the Machine are essentially a pair of (spoiler alert). However, they have more health than the basic ones encountered in Call of the Machine, having 1800 health instead of 600, and their ranged attack tracks a strafing player, whereas the player could easily dodge the ranged attack of the previous versions of this enemy by strafing.

Once you have defeated these two enemies along with any other enemy in the level, you will see a message appear reading 'Sequence complete' on the screen and the Temple will start exploding around you. Then you will end up in a void, along with an ending message, similar style to those that appear to when completing episodes in the original Quake.

With the Masters of the Machine dead, the Strogg are severed from their Maker. Your work is done, vengeance has been wrought upon the enemy, and you are lost in the infinite cosmic void.

Secrets[]

  • #1) In the boss arena where you take on the Servitors of Creation, head to the non-sinking platform to your right and shoot the middle plank above to drop down an Adrenaline.
  • #2) In the corner of the arena where the first Servitor of Creation is awaiting you, try to move him away from the corner and then get there, shoot the middle plank above, and grab the Double Damage that falls down.
