The Death Gate is the third level of the Unit OPERATION: Corpse Run in the new Call of the Machine campaign for the 2023 Quake II Remaster.
Quick Level Completion[]
The Gate Warden can be challenging, especially on the higher difficulty levels; the enemies he spawns are relatively weak but can get in the way of your dodging, and the four cages offer little cover, especially from his rocket-spread attack.
A favoured strategy is strafing around the edge of the room to allow as much time as possible to dodge his rocket spread. Ducking in front of the cages to grab health is only advisable in case of desperation as the splash damage if multiple rockets hit the cage is considerable. If you have Tesla Mines you can use these to stun the Gate Warden while you deal with his minions with the Chain Gun.
Surprisingly, there's nothing preventing you from leaving the arena, or even the Death Gate map. By rocket or grenade-jumping back up to the ledge you came in, you can use it as cover while immune to attack from the enemies the Gate Wardens spawns in. You can also return to Megacorpse IV to scavenge health and, by standing on the crates on the elevator, jump back into the shooting-gallery area which contains bullet ammo. The Gate Warden's health doesn't reset on re-entering Death Gate so if you don't mind cheesing the boss you can kill him with about two full Chain Gun ammo loads. You are then free to dispose of the various spawned-in enemies from the ledge at your leisure.
Walkthrough[]
Upon entering, you will meet the Gate Warden. He is holding 4 of your comrades captive inside cages. They cannot be saved or interacted with, but seem to be very desperate to be freed. They will be executed during battle, via pillars crushing them inside their cages.
While fighting the Gate Warden, you will be confronted with mutants and then guards. Take out the Gate Warden. Once he's defeated, light guards will appear and you must take these out before leaving.
Once you defeat all the enemies, the middle of the room will open and you teleport into a portal. Once you enter the portal you will see pitch black but hear the roar of unseen entities. However they won't be able to hurt you and you will teleport to the next level.

The Gate Warden is essentially a Hornet with 4000 health instead of the usual 2000. On Easy or Medium difficulty, it fires twin hyperblasters instead of twin chain guns, and fires its rockets in sequence instead of simultaneously.
*The Mutants in this level have less health than usual.
