The Swamps are the first level of The Reckoning. Having crash-landed in a small pool, Joker finds himself in hostile alien territory and must find a way to reunite with his team and carry out his mission.
The level is separated in two by a set of impenetrable laser fences. Initially finding himself on the wrong side of these barriers, Joker must find a more roundabout way into the Strogg compound. He will have to traverse an area of rough natural terrain, consisting of numerous caverns, canyons, water pools and underwater passages. The entire area is made up of slimy rock walls and is heavily infested by a new enemy, the Gekk. Thankfully, Joker is a little more fortunate than Bitterman was, and his drop pod contains a weapon a little more powerful than the Blaster.
In a few levels' time, Joker will return to this level from another direction to find a small Strogg security post and the exit gate towards the Military Compound.
In the 2023 remaster, Joker can find a flashlight near his drop pod; this item wasn't in the original game.

Secrets
- #1) When you find the machine gun, jump into the nearby pool - there is an underwater path that leads to a small cliff overlooking the main path, from which you can jump across the path to another ledge where a Silencer is hidden. But be advised, there are Gekks lurking on both ledges.
- #2) When you reach the Strogg tunnel, ignore it for now and take the narrow path up the wall to your right. It will take you to a cave with an Adrenaline hidden in a pool in the back. But, again, several Gekks are lurking on the high cliffs, and another Gekk waits inside the cave itself.
- #3) SECOND VISIT: When you reach the final Strogg structure, head to the room with the computer that lowers the bridge. After killing the Technician or Flyers (depending on the difficulty level), you can find a Flak Jacket in the nook it emerged from. The easiest way to reach it is to jump from the explosive barrel onto the other nearby ledges, but if the barrel was already destroyed, you can grenade jump your way up.
Other
It's possible to grenade jump the laser fences, thereby bypassing most of Unit 1. Grenades can be found early in this level, just after getting out of the first water section. Once grenades are collected, it's possible for a player to grenade jump their way back to the ledge from where they first jumped into the water, and then grenade jump over the laser fence.
On highest difficulties, it's very easy to miss the 2 out of 3 Gekks which are placed on a top of a cliff near the secret #2 (or even all 3), as they have very lax activation triggers. They are generally hard to spot, and if the player doesn't jump while standing on the ledge below them and opposite of them, will just stand towards the edge of the cliff doing nothing; there are many places where the player can look at them almost frontally, and they still don't attack.
