The realm of fan missions is a painful journey. Most will only bother with the highly rated packs, probably because the less popular levels are such for a reason. However, some of you might be crazy enough like me to explore the wild-west, the barely traveled roads. This does not come without its dangers however. Simply put, a lot of fan missions are highly broken. Usually what defines broken depends on the game, but I have yet to find a game that had fan content that worked 100% of the time.

This is pretty much a mapping of the wild west by a lone ranger who embarks on painful adventures and returns to tell the tale. Perhaps some are actually able to be completed, in which case it would be nice to be told so I can modify the list. This is pretty much a list of all broken content I have played for games with a lot of custom levels. If it isn't on this list, I have either played it and found it able to be completed or I haven't played it yet. The best way to determine this is by checking out my Youtube channel and seeing if I have a video on it, those usually chart my voyages into the unknown.

Think of this as a minimal spoiler guide. You could go to my channel or anywhere else, but the problem is that the internet loves spoilers and so you can end up ruining the levels for yourself. If it isn't on this list but has been played by me, just look further, because most likely there is something subtle you are missing. Think of me as the maiden voyage, one to chart out levels where it is impossible to 100% complete so others can have an easier time of picking up and enjoying levels without quickly assuming it is broken (like I need to sometimes). I will keep info to a minimum here, simply saying the name of the mission that is broken and what exactly is broken in it. Play the missions below with wariness.

Quake will also be ignored because it is already organized in such a way that said levels are already documented and thus this would be redundant.

Doom

Doom and Doom II are pretty much known for having such a massive number of levels that it is practically impossible to ever complete them all. Still, from my adventures I can pretty much say that I have yet to run into a Doom level where it is impossible to exit a level unless it was designed for Cooperative instead of Single Player. Note that when I say this I am referring to levels that actually have an exit, as opposed to one that didn't design a way to leave. Instead, the general problem I have is 100% completion. Doom has 3 counters at the end of every level. Enemies missing are a very rare but possible sight, Items can sometimes be placed in an impossible to reach area, and there are many a time when Secrets turn out to be incorrectly flagged in such a way to give you a headache. With 3 counters, it pretty much means that there are plenty of chances for people to mess up, so you get a lot of broken levels. IWAD levels are based on vanilla, modern source ports such as the latest SVNs of GzDoom fix the bugs on these levels.

IWAD Levels

  • E4M3 (Sever the Wicked) - 2 Secrets
    • In the area near the Red Key, 1 secret exists behind either torch facing the player, meaning 2 secrets in total are impossible to retrieve with Noclip.
  • E4M7 (And Hell Followed) - 2 Secrets
    • In the area behind the Yellow Door, there is a hidden ledge with an Invulnerability Sphere on the side opposite the button. The ledge itself is a secret, but the player cannot get onto it without Noclip. A sector beside the ledge is also flagged as a Secret, meaning the player must walk alongside the ledge while Noclipping in order to retrieve this one.

PWAD Levels

  • 11INHELL - Exit, 1 Item, 25 Enemies
    • As the level is designed for Cooperative play, the Exit is impossible to reach, corridor beside square crusher room.
    • The sole item in the map, an Invulnerability Sphere exists on a rather visible ledge. I cannot find a way to get this to lower.
    • There are no resources in the map besides the impossible to get Invulnerability Sphere and a Shotgun. There are 3 Barons on very high pillars. Using infighting, all 50 Pistol shots, and 3-4 Shotgun hits it is possible to kill one. There is a damaging floor blood river with more enemies, you could potentially kill the 4 Imps and escape if you are lucky enough, but the 7 barons are practically impossible when there is no healing in the map and they stand beside a damaging floor. There are 8 demons in a room behind the windowed area overlooking the Baron pillars, this room can never be accessed. There is a large room with 4 Spectres that cannot be accessed using normal means.
  • FEZ2 - 1 Secret
    • The teleporter corridor leading to the Yellow Door is flagged as a Secret, but the player teleports before they can reach the Secret.
  • K9 - 3 Secrets
    • The alcove with the shotgun shells leading to the elevator with the alternative Blue Door with the Invulnerability Sphere is considered a Secret. However, the door frame is raised and thus cannot be accessed without Noclip. Even when Noclipping, it is required for the wall with the Secret to be open, else the Secret cannot be claimed.
    • Secret in gap between Cacodemon alcove opposite main Blue Door and room beside it. As the player can only retrieve it by Noclipping and dropping to the bottom of the gap, it is impossible to retrieve during normal play.
    • A different textured wall to right after main Blue Door leads to the upper alcoves above the main Blue Door. The bottom step of this staircase is considered a Secret, but it only works when the player Noclips and the secret wall is open.
  • PSYCH - 21 Enemies, 1 Secret
    • There are 20 Barons and a Cyberdemon in a room. The problem is that the room is entirely inaccessible to the player and can only be looked in. The room beside it has an invisible wall that allows you to shoot Rockets through it, meaning you can get lucky with a few kills, but the lack of infighting or enemies being able to see you means that it is impossible to kill them all or obtain the BFG in the room.
    • Near the beginning room is a doorway. Beside this is a wall that can be opened to reveal a raised hidden area. The secret is in the sector between the raised section and the floor of the lower room, meaning it is impossible to reach since the player will always be raised above the sector.
  • TNCROSS2 - 1 Secret
    • In the main room, on the same wall as the starting ledge, is a hidden tunnel. The corridor is raised from the main room, the secret is found in the gap between this the lower floor and the raised surface, and therefore is impossible to obtain without Noclip.
  • BEHOLDER - 11 Enemies
    • There are 2 rooms worth of enemies that are supposed to get alerted and teleport into the level, but never do. These rooms are located beside the large room on the route to the Red Keycard.
  • netbeast - 2 Items
    • The main room of the level features 2 trapped Soul Spheres. The only problem is that there is actually no true way to obtain them.
  • GRRFY - 1 Secret
    • Noclipped around for a bit of time. I am not sure if the Secret exists in the map or is just another example of a messed up counter.
  • DOOM HOCKEY!!!!!!!! - 2 Items
    • It is impossible to leave the starting "locker room" without Noclipping. There are 2 Items in each locker room, meaning it is impossible to obtain them all without cheating.
  • Subway11 - 1 Secret
    • The teleporter in the red rock area is supposed to count as a Secret, but the player teleports before reaching it.
  • MAZE1 - 2 Items
    • The room behind the Blue Door has some ledges around the room have some resources on them, including 2 Armor Bonuses. The problem is that there is no way to access this ledge.
  • CHRIS - 3 Secrets
    • There is an area with 3 Teleporters in a marble room. All 3 Teleporters count as a Secret, but all teleport the player before they can reach them.
  • STAIRS - 46 Secrets
    • No idea where all these missing Secrets are, but it seems most likely a counter issue due to the nodes not being updated.
  • morehell - Exit, 1 Item, 6 Enemies
    • This is pretty much a modified version of 11INHELL. The addition of one of every type of gun means you will have enough to kill all the Barons on the pillars. All inaccessible areas besides the Exit are now accessible. Regardless, there are still not enough resources to kill the Barons in the damaging floor section since there is a lack of health and ammo.
    • This also means the Exit is still locked out due to being cooperative and the Invulnerability Sphere is still impossible to get.
  • NEVEREST - 1 Item
    • There is a Health Vial in a Cacodemon alcove that opens up in the circular staircase room. The only problem is that there is no way to enter this room, in fact there is an invisible wall that prevents the Cacodemon from escaping.
  • WANTON12 (E1M1) - 2 Items
    • At the far end of a maze in the area past the Blue Door is a Light Amplification Visor and Soul Sphere. The only problem is that you don't get to this maze until E1M2, it is a remnant from that level that is impossible to retrieve in E1M1.
  • WANTON12 (E1M2) - 1 Secret
    • While most of the stuff from E1M1 was removed, there is a gap in the Cacodemon maze from E1M1 that held a Secret. This Secret was not removed, but is impossible to backtrack to or get credit for in E1M2.
  • Laura Beyer's Doom (E1M1) - 1 Secret
    • The area by the Shotgun that looks out into the large courtyard counts as a secret, but it is entirely blocked by invisible walls and thus cannot be accessed without Noclip.
  • Laura Beyer's Doom (E1M2) - 3 Enemies
    • Unless the player is lucky with their Rocket Launcher splash damage, it is near-impossible to hit the three Lost Souls outside the window near the Cyberdemon alcove.
  • Laura Beyer's Doom (E1M6) - 2 Secrets
    • There are two alcoves, one on either side of the Yellow Key alcove, that are supposed to lower when the player approaches. Neither lowers and therefore they are impossible to access without Noclip.
  • Laura Beyer's Doom (E1M8) - 2 Items
    • There are two Armor Bonuses on top of a cage with a Demon. This is most likely an issue with incorrect placement, they were most likely intended to be inside the cage.
  • SWEET - 7 Items, 9 Enemies, 2 Secrets
    • The level is mostly linear, but has a secondary route that can be explored. The problem is that the secondary route is broken, dropping into a certain pit results in you getting stuck with no way out. A set of stairs raises to get you to a ledge with some Imps, but the problem is that the highest stair never raises and thus it is impossible to reach said ledge. While you can kill the Demons in the pit, it becomes impossible to drop into the pit to collect the 6 Health Bonuses and Chainsaw without getting stuck. As this route is also the only way to get the Soul Sphere, this means that is also impossible to retrieve without cheating.
    • The secret route to the Soul Sphere has an Imp and 7 Spectres guarding a Green Armor. All of this is impossible to reach without cheating to reach the Imp alcove of the previous room. On the opposite side of the Soul Sphere is a secret alcove with a Baron of Hell, this also cannot be reached without using the aforementioned route.
    • The route to the Soul Sphere, which cannot be reached without cheating, and the Baron of Hell alcove are both counted as secrets.
  • UNDERSEA - 2 Enemies
    • The button opening the pathway leading to the Red Door room is supposed to open two alcoves with Cacodemons as well, but neither opens. This means that both of these Enemies, or the alcoves themselves, are impossible to access without noclipping.
  • village - Red Key, 4 Items, 171 Enemies, 3 Secrets.
    • The Red Key requires a platform to raise that never raises, resulting in the player being required to Noclip in this one part to complete the level. Due to this, anything after the Red Key is also impossible to do without having acquired said key.
  • legend (E1M3) - 1 Secret
    • Teleporter leading to Red/Yellow door area counts as a Secret, but the player teleports before they are able to claim it, leading it to be impossible to retrieve without Noclip.
  • YOUNG1 ver 1.0 - 1 Secret
    • Timed area leading to Chaingun, triggers when walking through a set of lights, counts as Secret. The problem is that there is no viable way to time this, the corridor is too long and the opened doorway thus too far from the trigger. There might be a trick to make you able to reach this, but I have been unable to prove any are possible.
  • PURDUE - 1 Secret
    • Yet another level with a Secret that I am unsure if it even exists in the map. Noclipping around didn't really reveal anything to me.
  • RUNLKHL2 - 1 Enemy
    • Shotgun Sergeant stuck in void of the segment of the maze near the turn leading to the button.
  • e2gc (E2M2) - 1 Enemy
    • Pinky Demon part of mob in first lowering crate. The problem is that there are two pillars that remain up, one of which is too close to the Pinky Demon's position. As such, when the crate lowers, the Pinky Demon gets stuck on the pillar. As the pillar is very high and can only be seen from a short proximity, this means that in Vanilla Doom it is essentially impossible to aim high enough to kill the Pinky Demon.
  • SS27BET2 - 3 Secrets
    • The route from the Armor Bonus staircase to the Nukage corridor counts as a Secret, but the Nukage corridor doorway is slightly raised, meaning the Secret can never be touched without Noclipping.
    • Hidden Teleporter between two switches in middle area of E1M4 counts as a Secret, but teleports the player before they can claim it.
    • Teleporter in Plasma Gun cage counts as a Secret, but the player teleports before they can claim it.
  • ACASTLE2 - 3 Secrets
    • To reach the main section of castle, it is required to hit one switch and then press a second that will raise a pathway leading to the next section. The latter button of the first two sections, the ones before the main castle, are counted as Secrets. However, they only trigger when the player Noclips near them.
    • The teleporter leading to the exit button is counted as a Secret, but teleports the player before they are able to claim it.
  • THETA-4 - 1 Secret
    • To get the BFG, which is considered a Secret, you need to walk across a floor piece in the red lava section. The problem is that I have zero idea how to lower the floors of this section.
  • TOWER2 - 3 Secrets
    • 2 of the Secrets are on the staircase leading down to the Secrets corridor from the grey corridor side, though the player needs to Noclip in order to claim them.
    • Another Secret is in the area past the Yellow Door. Pressing a Button in the vicinity results in a window opening to a tunnel that is impossible to access. To claim the Secret, the player must Noclip into the entryway of the tunnel.
  • Xenomorph 'The complex' - 2 Enemies
    • 2 Imps behind the crate barricade are impossible to kill, there is no way to alert them to your presence so they move and they are positioned in such a way they cannot be reached by the player. There is no way past the crate barricade.
  • INVASION... - Level 1 - Contamination - 1 Secret
    • Teleporter leading to room near Main Engineering counts as a Secret, but teleports the player before they are able to claim the Secret.
  • Wasteland: Mountain of Fire - 1 Enemy
    • The ledge leading to the Soul Sphere Secret, that also leads to the exit area, overlooks numerous rivers of Lava that twist away from the player's view. The one across beside the area you cross to reach the exit area has a small segment never visible by the player that contains a Lost Soul. As the player is unable to access this area without becoming permanently trapped, or otherwise alert the Lost Soul, it is impossible to kill this enemy.
  • Acid Walk - 5 Secrets
    • The fork in the pathway near the start has a pit of Nukage in the middle of it with a Medikit. Dropping into this pit, then opening one of the walls will reveal a Teleporter leading to the middle of the Nukage tunnels. This Teleporter counts as a Secret, but teleports you before you are able to claim it.
    • The Demon platform before the large door leading to the Cacodemon swarm has a small hole to the left side of the door that can be dropped into. One of the walls in this small pit can be opened to reveal a Teleporter leading to the Cadodemon swarm. This Teleporter counts as a Secret, but teleports you before you are able to claim it.
    • There is another Teleporter in the hole opposite the aforementioned that leads to the Red Key area. This Teleporter also teleports you before you are able to claim the Secret.
    • Just after the Blue Door, if the player drops off to the nukage to the left, is another wall that can be opened to reveal a Teleporter leading to the spiral staircase. This teleporter also teleports you before you are able to claim the Secret.
    • Near the area where the player can claim the Yellow Key is a pit of nukage with a Shotgun. One of the walls can be opened to reveal a Teleporter leading to the area between the Red and Blue doors. This Teleporter also teleports you before you are able to claim the Secret.
  • FOREST (E1M3) - 1 Item
    • Partial Invisibility on kitchen sink. There doesn't seem to be a way to lower it or otherwise get on the sink.
  • E3M5-A - 1 Item
    • Soul Sphere in middle of map impossible to get, no section of floor lowers to allow access to it. There is a switch in the previous room that looks like it should do something, but it is completely inoperable.
  • E3M6-A - Exit, 5 Items, 50 Enemies
    • Everything past the "starting door" of the normal map is impossible to access due to there being no way of opening the door from the side the player spawns on.
  • EE2L1 - 2 Items, 1 Enemy
    • Invisibility Sphere and Light Amplification visor behind starting window. As there is no way out there, these Items are impossible to retrieve.
    • A Shotgun Guy also exists behind the starting window. As he is behind an invisible wall however, it is impossible to kill him.
  • E1M1-L - Exit, 35 Items, 72 Enemies, 8 Secrets
    • The exit is designed to be cooperative, so hitting the third switch in the three switch room results in the crate with the exit door (right next to the start) lowering momentarily. It appears impossible for a regular player to make it, meaning it was designed to only be able to be exited if the players cooperate.
    • This level is essentially E2M2 with some modifications in the crate maze. However, the routes exiting the maze to the large green marble area are blocked off. As the player is unable to get any keys, this means the Yellow Door Chaingun area is also blocked off. This means nearly 2/3 of the actual map is impossible to access.
  • E1L1 - 1 Secret
    • The corridor with the invisible wall with an Imp behind it is impossible to access. While nothing else exists in this corridor, there is a Secret in the hidden area connecting this corridor with the Secret behind the Imp alcove.
  • M1 - 1 Item
    • Health Vial located in void between courtyard and computer room. Needless to say, this is impossible to retrieve without Noclipping.
  • E1M1-D - 2 Items
    • The computer room has two Armor Bonuses beside the far wall in the central area, but the problem is that the central area acts as a Teleporter to the Shotgun Secret. It is therefore impossible to grab the Armor Bonuses because the player teleports before they are able to reach them.
  • M9 - 6 Enemies
    • Six Baron of Hells are behind a wall near the start in a room intended to teleport enemies when the Rocket Launcher is taken. As no Rocket Launcher exists, none of the Barons teleport.
  • M5 - Everything
    • This level is essentially impossible, there appears to be no way to get around the barrels without dying.
  • M6 - 1 Enemy
    • A Shotgun Guy exists in the maze section near the hidden area with the Backpack. As he is stuck in the black void of said area, he is impossible to kill without Noclipping.
  • M7 - 9 Enemies
    • 4 Cyberdemons exist in the void around the starting courtyard that are impossible to reach without Noclip.
    • Another 3 Cyberdemons exist in the void around the normal start of E1M7 and thus also cannot be killed.
  • M4 - Everything
    • This level is essentially impossible, there appears to be no way to get around the barrels without dying.
  • E1M2-B - 1 Secret
    • As this level only works in DOS Doom, I have no idea how many Secrets are in this level, but I assume 5. If so, one doesn't seem to work, probably the Teleporter leading to the Plasma Gun based on how Secrets have been incorrectly used in the past. Due to the lack of modern sourceports, I can't really test anything.
  • E2L2_gg1 - 10 Enemies
    • There is a room beside the Yellow Key containing 10 Shotgun Guys that cannot be accessed in any way. Most likely they were designed to trigger when the player picked up the Yellow Key, but no such event occurs.
  • RAMBO - 1 Secret
    • The Teleporter below the Rocket Launcher platform that teleports you to said platform is counted as a Secret, but teleports you before you are able to claim it.
  • E1M1TRPS - 1 Item
    • The Invulnerability Sphere in the middle on the courtyard is impossible to retrieve, since stepping in the nukage pit results in the outer area immediately raising and thus trapping the player in the nukage pit.
  • Castle from Hell!!! - 1 Enemy
    • A Former Human is stuck in the void near the 2 Soul Spheres room.
  • DMHERO - 1 Item, 2 Secrets
    • A Soul Sphere and Megaarmor are stuck behind a pair of trees, meaning both can never be obtained. While the Megaarmor doesn't count, the Soul Sphere is an item.
    • The barrier blocking the Chaingun secret still exists in this version even though the entire area is blocked off, meaning it is impossible to access this without cheating.
    • Similarly, there is no way to access the dual button secret without using Noclip since this area is out of bounds as well.
  • HELL HOTEL - 2 Items, 4 Enemies, 1 Secret
    • A wall is supposed to lower when you pick up the Chainsaw to reveal an alcove with two Armor Bonuses and four Demons.
    • One of the walls in the aforementioned alcove can be opened to reveal a Secret with Rockets and a Rocket Launcher. The problem is that the alcove can never be accessed, meaning the Secret can never be reached.
  • Hell Bound - 2 Secrets
    • The wall with the line of Health Bonuses in the Baron courtyard across from the start is considered a Secret, but can only be claimed if the player Noclips around this area.
    • The Teleporter leading to the cage with multiple Soul Spheres is considered a Secret, but the player teleports before they can claim it. Note that the area around the Teleporter is also considered a Secret, this one can be claimed normally.
  • Urban Wars - 1 Secret
    • Interacting with the corner looking outwards of the house in the room opposite the main entrance reveals a useless button. This counts as a Secret, though the hidden area is too small for the player to claim it without Noclip.
