For on-pickup auto weapon switch purposes, the character will always switch to the newly acquired weapon. However, if the game is being played in a deathmatch setting, the character will only switch to the newly equipped weapon if its "Weapon Tier" is higher, where weapons tiers are in the following ascending order:

Axe < Shotgun < Nailgun < Super Shotgun < Grenade Launcher < Super Nailgun < Rocket Launcher < Thunderbolt

Note that the character will still switch to a higher tier weapon on pickup even if it already is in possession.
